Lone demonstrator backs Bush; 75 more protest war
By Eileen Kelley Special to The Denver Post

COLORADO SPRINGS - Bob Lopez stood on top of a dusty and barren hill Monday in isolation.

Wearing black overalls, an American flag button-down shirt and a cowboy hat, the Vietnam-era veteran who was stationed at Fort Carson 38 years ago held a large American flag.

He wore a sign with large letters proclaiming his respect for President Bush and the U.S. troops still in Iraq.

Down the hill and in a heavily traveled area in full view of the massive presidential motorcade, about 75 people packed a median and chanted, "No war. No war," as the president sped past in a convoy of sleek cars and SUVs.

4. And yet . . .
The focus of the account is on the lone supporter, complete with quotes and the story of his day. The 75? One truncated quote at the tag-end of the report.

Fairly unbalance, if you ask me.

15. Typical. I recall similar treatment..
at the Houston protest in February. A few thousand showed up against the war; but the one guy across the street had THREE TV cameras on him while he talked.

It was irritating to me to know that all I had to do to get MY thoughts on TV was hold up a proBush sign. Like, why am I less valuable than that guy..?

I know the answer, of course, but it's so blatant when you are there.

12. Mr. Frylock?......This is the ratio of the "acurate polls" as well!
There are many republicans livid about Iraq too.

I am looking forward to seeing how alot of the Congressional
people loose their jobs at the next election.

What will we do with the Media?

Now that I have his name -- I'm heading south to Colorado Springs this weekend, and I will have a man-to-man talk with this moron. Obviously he must love sucking *'s tits for no apparent reason except that he's a fucking moron.

I think Colorado Springs are already truly waking up and seeing what a effin' moron and what an hypocrite * is.. Colorado will swing Dem in 2004. Guaranteed.

14. I wonder how veterans can support *
I can see of course caring about the men and women over there as we all do and the veterans have been there.
But how can they support bush* when he's put them in danger for lies and personal gain and also the unforgivable way these troops have been treated.Hungry, thirsty, wrong equipment, walking and riding targets,on and on.
I just don't understand.

16. These paragraphs are quite telling
Paula Gossage, a member of the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission, had expected a larger turnout from both camps.

The last major anti-war demonstration in Colorado Springs, attended by more than 4,000 people, turned troublesome after police fired tear gas into large crowds and arrested some 20 people in February.

"So many (Americans) have been sold on this story about terrorism. That's all we hear about, and people are fear-based," Gossage said. "I also think a lot of people are afraid to come out because of what happened in February. ... It's like ... people went back into their holes, and you cannot blame them. It's a scary situation," she said.
