Bomb Squad To Detonate Explosive Materials Found In Apartment
TEXAS CITY, Texas -- A Texas City apartment complex was evacuated Thursday in order for the bomb squad to detonate explosives found in one of the units. The materials caused an earlier explosion that killed the apartment resident, officials told KPRC Local 2.

More than 100 residents of the Lakeview Apartment Complex, located at 8801 Emmett F. Lowery Parkway, were told to leave the premises shortly before 11 a.m.

<snip>

"We believe it to be a peroxide-based explosive," Salway said. "It's a very volatile substance that's extremely sensitive to heat, shock and friction. We found a considerable amount. It's not going to consume the apartment complex with the small detonation that we are going to incur."

A resident, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Rugo, was working with combustible materials inside a unit Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m. sparking the explosion, investigators said.

Rugo died at the scene.

A second man, Curtis Jetton, was also inside the apartment. He was sent to UTMB with first-degree burns to his hands. Jetton was taken into custody and charged with providing false information.

..............

Watching on CNN Headline News, they've decided to explode the device in place, saying it is too dangerous to move to a containment vessel. Several dump trucks with their beds raised up are being used as shields to try to defect the debris away.

It looks like its part of an apartment or townhouse complex. The police are trying to evacuate an elderly woman with healh issues before detonation.

The terror alert level for the city has not been raised because they don't believe it's international terrorism.

'Yeah. He he."

"Huh huh huh."

"He he he."

"You're pretty cool, Beavis!"

3. Likely they were making acetone-peroxide explosive.
It is used in detonators. You can make it with hair bleach, nail polish remover, and sulfuric acid. None of which are hard to get at all. But the stuff is very touchy, which is why it makes such a good detonator!

6. Oh fun fun fun
Well, at least when these idiots decide to make their own explosives instead of simply buying off the shelf gunpower and primers is that they tend to blow themselves up. Darwin in action?

7. I'd say Darwin Awards nominee material here.
And WHY do this stuff when you can buy Tannerite through the mail? (Its a binary high explosive that is not dangerous until you mix it. It is used for exploding targets on firing ranges.)

8. Or it was a meth lab
they use that stuff in it too.

Meth labs here in the midwest are taken DEADLY serious..they are more effing volatile than nitro glycerin bottles that you see in the old movies. No reason they cannot be in Texas too!

9. I think the bomb squad can recognize a meth lab, though...
...and would have said it was to the media.

15. They don't do that here until AFTERWARD
if at all..I mean, you would not want to scare the masses into thinking their neighborhoods have meth labs in them?

The spin is always good when the are on scene, then the truth comes out AFTER they clean out the hole, if the press is even around by that time. Cops will do most anything to NOT tell the news media they are on the scene of a huge meth lab in someone's apartment or suburban home..now, if it is a TRAVELING lab, then they fess up right away.

Trust me on this, they do not even call the fire department on open air if they suspect a meth lab, they call the station direct...cops DO NOT want a bunch of people freaking out until after everything is calm and the pony show is over. The they spin it like it was nothing...or, if they are after bigger fish or pols, they spin it worse than it was..depends on the political climate of the department at the time.

21. meth labs & fire dept.
I work for the fire dept., we respond to meth labs on a regular basis, and receive the calls over the radio, just like any other call. It's "investigate an unknown substance", we respond, along with the haz-mat guys. The PD loves to make a big show, calling the P.I.O., blocking streets, evacuating the area etc.. They want the appearance of extreme danger, to keep up public awareness.

16. 10% hydrogen peroxide is hair bleach; 90% is rocket fuel.
But see post #3 for what they were probably making. This is what Richard Reid, the "shoe bomber", used.

22. Thanks. It's not like I haven't tried stuff like that myself ...
I never managed to blow my parent's house up, but looking back on it, that was due to luck as much as knowledge or skill on my part.

Better to just read "Uncle Tungsten".:)

23. Your attitude is why we can't buy good chemistry sets anymore
Please repost the knowledge. That sort of self-censorship only belongs in Freeperville.

24. Um, no. Actually, it's because such stuff gets widely circulated on the
Internet that we can't buy chemistry sets anymore. When you actually had to have some intellectual drive and ability to find stuff like this, it was fairly safe. When all it takes is radical ideology and a modem, that makes it something to get the attention of the censors.

I'm not agreeing with enforced censorship, just saying it makes more sense to keep the dangerous stuff to yourself if you don't want someone stepping in and doing it for you, in a much less friendly way. It's fun to brag about what you know -- anyone can see I do  -- but one needs to recognize that there are times when it's good sense to hold your tongue/keyboard on some matters.

They HAVE to know what they are doing.

The consequences of not knowing what they are doing don't bear thinking about.

14. So, they're diffusing a giant bomb, but it's not terrorism.

Unless, of course, there's 'colored' people involved.

25. not terrorism. nothing to see here. bomb already blew up, so much more
bomb stuff left that we have to blow it in place, but nothing to see, and remember, it's only terror if brown people come from other countries and blow stuff up. although if they blow themselves up over there, that's terror too.
