Turkey cancels USD 500 million deal with aircraft industry
Turkey scraps deal with Israel Aircraft Industries to upgrade aircraft in protest at Lebanon offensive

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3288072,00.html

<snip>

"The Turkish government has canceled a deal to upgrade fighter jets worth USD 500 million because of the war in Lebanon.

The Israel Aircraft Industries fears that more deals could be canceled.

In 1997 Turkey signed an agreement with Israel for the upgrading of 54 Phantom aircraft at the cost of USD 1 billion.

The deal was concluded in 2003 and Turkey showed interest in upgrading another 50 Phantom jets for USD 500 million.

Turkey is weighing the purchase of new F-16 jets from the United States instead of upgrading its old fleet.

"They are old costumers, and the cancellation of the deal is a very bad sign," a senior military official said Monday."

3. This doesn't make sense
Turkey is one of the big winners in Israel's attack on Lebanon.

If Israel controls the southern part of Lebanon, Turkey will benefit from an oil pipeline planned to run through the area. There's an article posted in one of the forums that goes into detail.

4. But most of Turkey is Muslim
Turkey is a moderate, but still very Muslim state.

And Muslims usually take a dim view of Israel's actions in Lebanon.

but the beneficiary is Israel - not Turkey.

see: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=CHO20060806&articleId=2906

More recently, the Eastern Mediterranean corridor, from the Red Sea, through Lebanon and Syria to the Syrian- Turkish border has, both from a strategic and economic standpoint, become an important factor in the evolving Israel-Turkey military alliance. It is intimately related to the proposed Ceyhan-Ashkelon oil pipeline project (to be implemented by Turkey and Israel), which would link the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan pipeline to Israel's Ashkelon-Eilat pipeline. (Michel Chossudovsky, The War on Lebanon and the Battle for Oil, July 2006)

The war on Lebanon ultimately seeks to establish joint Israeli-Turkish military control over a coastal corridor extending from the Israeli-Lebanese border to the East Mediterranean border between Syria and Turkey. What this militarization of the coastal Lebanese-Syrian corridor would signify is the control of almost the entire Eastern Mediterranean coastline by Turkey and Israel under the terms of the Israeli-Turkish military alliance. (Ibid)

The objective of Israel is not only to acquire Caspian sea oil for its own consumption needs but also to play a key role in re-exporting Caspian sea oil back to the Asian markets through the Red Sea port of Eilat. The strategic implications of this re-routing of Caspian sea oil are farreaching.

What is envisaged is to link the BTC pipeline to the Trans-Israel Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline, also known as Israel's Tipline, from Ceyhan to the Israeli port of Ashkelon. In April 2006, Israel and Turkey announced plans for four underwater pipelines, which would bypass Syrian and Lebanese territory.

Tempest - Thanks for the link. :)

6. Yes but, If Turkey is seen to align too closely with Israel at this time,
the islamist in the country might push for regiem change. Muslims are furious and will be for a long time to come.

go after the Kurds in self-defense like the Israelis did, but we wouldn't let them because they aren't Israel.
