Clarett arrested; Guns found in truck
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Maurice Clarett was arrested early Wednesday after a highway chase that ended with police using Mace on the former Ohio State running back and finding four loaded guns in his truck, a police spokesman said.

Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.

"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."

Clarett was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed. Police planned to charge him with carrying concealed weapons and other counts, Woods said.

1. He's going to jail
As he should. He's in real deep do-do if any of the guns turn up stolen. Federal crime.

2. That's where he belongs
He could have been a star, a multi-millionaire because of his athletic talent; but no, he turned out to be a two-bit thief and loser.

9. You have to wonder why he was wearing a vest.
Methinks this kid was involved in some deep shit.

4. You know...I hate to say it but...
Things are going to end really, really, bad for this young man.
I am a Broncos fan.
BIG TIME.
I recall when Mike Shanahan drafted him in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft.
Shanahan said that he thought that Clarett was talented and just needed a opportunity.
He bitched abut the money.
He bitched about not being named the starter almost immediately.
He bitched about the practices and he faked an injury.
He was aloof and never bothered to gel with his teammates.
He argued with his coaches, most notably, his position coach.

Finally, Shanny had enough and cut his ass.

This is a indication of how screwed up he really is.

If you get drafted as a running back for the Denver Broncos, you just hit the Power-ball.
NO TEAM in the NFL churns out more successful running backs than the Broncos.
With that system and those coaches, half of DU could get plugged in there and gain 1,000 yards.

Clarett had the opportunity of a lifetime dropped in his lap.
All he had to do was keep his mouth shut, work hard, and listen to his coaches.
Instead, he pouted and whined and wound up getting cut.

I feel that things will end very badly for this young man.
He is either going to wind up dead or in prison for a very, very, long time.

It doesn't help that he has a bad habit of not paying his lawyers either.

FOUR LOADED GUNS IN HIS SUV?

He's going down.
In more ways than one.

6. If you've ever read any interviews with Clarett's mother...
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 09:40 AM by theHandpuppet
... you'll know where this kid got a big part of his attitude. As a lifelong OSU fan I recall reading early articles in which she was interviewed and thinking brother, if this kid turns out all right it will be a miracle. Talk about spoiled -- she treated her son like a GOD. No reponsiblities, no consequences, he was perfect and infallable in very way no matter what, even as he disrupted his H.S. team with his whining and "me first" attitude.

What a sorry state of affairs. He could have been a great one and he simply self-destructed. A very troubled young man.

15. Yes.

A little known running back out of Georgia, Terrell Davis, blossomed in Denver. When he was at Georgia, Ray Goff was the head coach. During those years - and with Davis on the bench - Goff lamented that he didn't have a running back (this was after Garrison Hearst went to the NFL).

I call Terrell Davis the "running back that Ray Goff didn't have."

7. That is one possible explanation
or on drugs

I think he believes he is somehow better than everyone else. The courts screwed up when they ruled in his favor regarding the NFL. If he had remained in college until at least his junior year he might had seasoned enough to know what was expected of him.

8. People did a lot of whining ...
about Lindsay Lohan being the centerpiece of an article in the LBN. I'm going to do my own bit of whining here just to prove a point. Who the F(&^%*&^*K Cares about this guy. I don't know who the hell he is, and it has no bearing on my life. He's an idiot, he should go to jail, but I don't see why we spend any time on celebs like this...

Of course I'm being sarcastic, because people on this thread are paying some sort of reverence to the fact that this jackass had some kind of talent at one point and people thought he might turn his life around, and even though he didn't people still seem to be showing reverence when he's packing way too much firepower and beating up police. I just think its sad that all you have to do to attract the most ire on DU is be a female actress to get railed at and called a whore, and a drunk... If your a sports celebrity well "you could have been a contender" Sports is such a distraction from real problems in the US its incredible. Unkick

10. It's the bigger story reflected by young men like Clarett
It's a story that keeps repeating itself over and over in this society. How we are losing so many talented young people to crime, to drugs, to self-destructive behavior. Many of us who knew of Maurice Clarett prior to his ever donning the uniform of the Buckeyes were looking for a feel good story, a story about a kid who grew up in a bad neighborhood but made good. But he turned out to be yet another victim, another angry and damaged young man whose remarkable talents were wasted and whose life appears to be one headed for jail. There are thousands upon thousands of young men and women in our country just like Clarett, but perhaps hearing stories such as this one will open a dialogue about some serious sickness in our society. That's where stories like this can be important -- not crap about Paris Hilton buying a pair of shoes or who Jennifer Ansotn is dating, but stories of the American Dream gone horribly awry.

11. Victim?
Clarett is a VICTIM? Lemme see: a free ride to OSU bsed on his athletic ability, and he's a victim? I guess OSU forced him to become a criminal.

12. In a way, yes
Because the person whose life is truly destroyed is his own. How much do you know about Maurice Clarett and how he grew up? This is a young man who needed help a long time ago because whatever it takes to graduate from the school of hard knocks, Clarett didn't have it. Despite his physical gifts and talents, he didn't have the emotional/psychological strength to overcome his personal demons.

No one is excusing his crimes here. He's made all the wrong choices, terrible choices and now he will pay the consequences as he should. But in his own way he is his own victim and a victim of a society which is failing our young in depressed urban areas throughout the country. Clarett could have chosen differently, but it's a lot easier to make those right choices when you've grown up in a nice neighborhood, never witnessed your friends being gunned down in the streets, had the guidance of a father who took some responsibility for his family and not tried to struggle with all that plus the expectations and media spotlight on and off the field. That's not to mention the money that was being waved in front of his nose, the kind of money a kid with empty pockets finds hard to ignore.

It's a sorry story, but one with bigger implications on the society which served as his breeding gound. That's all I'm saying.

Clarret had a chance that not many will ever have. He blew it. He alone. He victimized others rather than being a vitim himself.

14. Okay, whatever floats your boat.
I just feel that without some kind of dialogue about the underpinnings of what causes some of these young men to ruin their lives there will never be an out-of-the-box answer we will understand, much less any solutions. But you're not interested and so it goes. Fair enough.

17. Great!
You should post this at the LBN posting about Lindsay Lohan. Its turning into a big insecure male circle jerk about what a "whore" she is and how she just wants to sleep with all the army guys in Iraq. Funny how people will take all their agression out on celebrities and tell stories that sound more like their own than the celebrity's at all. I'm beginning to think everyone at DU is either a Sports Nerd or a Misogynist wife-beating jackass

18. Don't even bother trying to argue.
For some people, it's just easier to see things as good or bad and never question why that is.

Clarett had a lot of things working against him, but in my opinion the biggest is that he was a gifted athlete. This afforded him the luxury of skating through school and most likely never having to do things for himself or take responsibility for his actions. There are many star athletes who experience the same thing all the time. Clarett was a star, got whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted it, and when his actions were finally too much to overlook, he got hit with disciplinary action. Based on how he's acted since then to screw up his chance at a professional career, I'd say it's a pretty good bet that he's suffering from a serious case of entitlement.

19. Unbelievable.
NONE of this is his fault. Even the fact that he was a "gifted athlete" was one of the biggest factors working "against." Gee, I wonder how ANY gifted athletes survive?

21. Wow.
Maybe you should start reading posts more carefully before flying off the handle. Since you like peppering your replies with quotes, perhaps you can find the place where I said none of this was his fault.

(Good luck doing that, since I didn't.)

Maurice Clarett is a royal jerk. I'm not defending the guy. I'm just pointing out some of the things that contributed to his massive ego. There are plenty of athletes who come through the whole being-treated-like-royalty thing just fine; unfortunately, he's not one of them. His fault? Absolutely. His and his alone. Examining things in his background that helped encourage his behavior isn't the same thing as giving him a free pass.

That in no way absolves him from responsibility for his actions. But you're blind if you can't see that letting someone get away with whatever they want for an extended period of time will influence their personality, you're blind.

Now feel free to make up some quotes as you reply to this post.

23. Not his fault?
I don't see anyone saying that, nor do I see anyone saying that Clarett shouldn't pay the price for his crimes. I do see people trying to understand why someone who seemingly had it all as gifted athlete didn't turn out to be the next Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. Maybe being a gifted athlete isn't a cure-all for certain other life circumstances, hmmm?

It's a rather interesting question, one that requires a little societal self examination. And some of the conclusions aren't very comfortable or cheering; certainly not like winning a national championship. Boy, isn't that exciting! But the mundane, day-to-day details of living may not all be resolved by being a gifted athlete. Shocking!

16. Paris Hilton
Is a little different from Lindsay Lohan. There are just as many poor girls from Oklahoma or Ohio or Peoria in LA trying to make it and some have are "talented" as you say Maurice was. Just as many of these poor girls lose their way in the maze of drugs and sex that is LA... in this case Lindsay Lohan, a child actress who has known nothing else is falling victim to the same temptations that your violent athlete is. Don't see much different there. There is also a similarity in that some of these girls and boys are forced into what some may compare to child labour when they are forced to auditions and criticized or beaten for their success or lack thereof. In sports this is akin to going out for the team. You read Sports Illustrated, and I read the Hollywood Reporter. People at DU need to realize that they don't get to spew their insecurities about women and their hatred for them while paying none of the same treatment to the male celebrities that grace the pages of the tabloids. My rant against Clarett was meant as SARCASM because frankly I believe these celebrities stand as a screen to project society on. I find a disparity between how the screen works when DU approaches some celebrities over others. Its pretty obvious IMHO, that Americans live vicariously through their celebrities, and DU should be a place that investigates this with a little less of a bias, don't you think?

why would someone be driving around with weapons in BPV?

This guy was up to no good.
