Cheney: Sept. 11 a day of national unity

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney called Sept. 11 "a day of national unity" Monday at a Pentagon remembrance ceremony for the victims of a terror attack in 2001.

Cheney said he will always remember the scene of the al-Qaida attack as nightfall came after a hijacked American Airlines plane slammed into the building at full throttle.

"Perhaps no one expressed it better than an Army lieutenant colonel who was here that morning attempting to rescue others," Cheney said. "It was all, as he put it, so 'cheap, dirty and senseless.'"

Cheney said much has been learned about the new war since the attacks.
"We have learned that there is a certain kind of enemy whose ambitions have no limits, and whose cruelty is only fed by the grief of others," Cheney said.
