FBI willing to go undercover in Congress if necessary
WASHINGTON - The new chief of the FBI's Criminal Division, which is swamped with public corruption cases, says the bureau is ramping up its ability to catch crooked politicians and might run an undercover sting on Congress.

Assistant FBI Director James Burrus called the bureau's public corruption program "a sleeping giant that we've awoken," and predicted the nation will see continued emphasis in that area "for many, many, many years to come."

So much evidence of wrongdoing is surfacing in the nation's capital that Burrus recently committed to adding a fourth 15- to 20-member public corruption squad to the FBI's Washington field office.
...

If conditions warrant, Burrus said, he wouldn't balk at urging an undercover sting like the famed Abscam operation in the late 1970s in which a U.S. senator and six House members agreed on camera to take bribes from FBI agents posing as Arab sheikhs.

10. It's aides, not aids.
I probably would not have known if I hadn't been one.

Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 08:43 PM by teryang
The corruption in the FBI is sickening. This matter needs to be investigated by Congress. Also all the obstruction by the FBI prior to 911.

Now that the Democrats many retake Congress, NOW they suddenly 'get religion' and decide to investigate?

6. Which of the 3 branches of the federal gov't is the FBI under?
At first, I said to myself, "executive branch, of course"... but wait... wouldn't it be the judicial branch? I honestly don't know! (How embarrassing.)

It's the executive branch, is my guess. The strangest thing though: lately, the FBI doesn't seem to be playing along with the rest of this corrupt Bush/Cheney executive branch. We hear that they are investigating this or that corrupt GOP congressman... then there's the AIPAC thing... the FBI, if it continues to show spirit like this, might even restore a tiny bit of my faith in this country.

19. It's silly to say the FBI can't investigate crimes committed by Congress or judges
Congress will try to plea that they should police themselves. They should, but when you commit federal crimes, the FBI is supposed to investigate. Suggestions to the contrary is just more of Congress trying to act above the law.

24. Self-policing never works.
It doesn't work in the legal field, the medical field and certainly not in the political field.

The corrupt bastards in every one of those playgrounds knows how to play the game and hedge their bets. People are defenseless against them.

36. I never said the FBI couldn't investigate crimes committed by congress or judges!
I think it's great, if they do. I call it "checks and balances".

That's something we used to kind of have in this country, before 2000...

22. Poppy controls the FBI &CiA
This announcement is meant to put "someone" on notice.
The message coming loud and clear to the WH.
Methinks, the message is meant for Cheney.

Theres no love lost between Poppy and Cheney,
and frankly speaking, *bad blood* would be a more apt
description of their relationship.

After tomorrow, I think we're going to see an escalation
of events aimed at putting a curb on the rouge VP, Cheney.
imho, of course.

Poppy and his cronies still wield power through the back door.(no not that one!)
Don't kid yourself. The old saying: "It takes a thief to catch a thief" still applys,
and still applys mightily.

34. The point is..
Cheney is flipping the old timers the bird and taking over (sole) control himself.

That was never part of the program. Cheney is the designated lead pack mule
and as mules go, they have a mind of their own.

I wouldn't count the old man out just yet, he and Scowcroft(sp)
and company, still wield plenty of clout behind the scenes.

After all, JR's standing there with his hands in his pockets
and a shrug...saying, "But what can do about it?"

Poppy's mission is to rescue money going south and JR's hiney.

39. 2 Tril in tax cuts. 1 tril in Iraq. 1 tril in debt payments.
1 tril in no bids, gasoline and earmarks.

5 tril minus 1 tril for over-exuberance.

= 4 tril.

Poppy's a front man, imho.

40. Thanks..
I like the over-exuberance tril..it tickles! :)

Except, the front man reports to a roundtable.
And if Poppy was looking for advise from WJC,
sometimes you have to know the right questions
to ask, to get the desired result.

Laughing, thinking Poppy picking WJC's brain for
ideas while WJC is returning the favor and then some.
