Missouri SOS asked for Photo ID at polling place(despite court ruling striking down requirement)
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 06:49 PM by Tiggeroshii
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri's chief elections official said Monday she was asked for photo identification at the voting booth despite a court ruling striking down the requirement.

"I'm guessing this may be happening in other parts of the state," warned Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, a Democrat who had opposed Republican efforts to mandate a photo ID in Missouri.

She said that a worker at the St. Louis Election Board asked her three times to show photo ID when she went to cast an absentee ballot Friday.

headline can be misread: I thought SOS was demanding it of others.

3. talked to my sister tonight
...she got a postcard yesterday that told her she MUST bring ID in order to vote. She's voted in the same precinct for 20 years.

She's going to look at it again when she gets home tonight - I'll be willing to bet it's another GOP dirty trick.

13. MO is requiring ID, photo id is not required, though
I live across the river but have seen PSAs about it. You have to show voter registration id, drivers license, or a utility bill w/your name and address.

15. My experience...
At my polling place (Maryland Heights, MO) they seemed to be taking utility bills, though the vote notices said 'signature (not photo) ID required'. Also, it seems that everyone's slip is signed off on by an election official from each party. Don't know what happens if they disagree.

Mo. elections chief in election dispute
By DAVID A. LIEB, Associated Press Writer

Missouri's chief elections official said Monday she was asked for photo identification at the voting booth despite a court ruling striking down the requirement.

Carnahan said that she tried to explain a photo ID was not necessary, but that the election worker replied that she was instructed to ask for one anyway. Carnahan said she eventually was allowed to vote without displaying a photo identification.

"To have that experience personally was very troubling," she said.
