Iran's Ebadi Collects Nobel, Takes Swipe at West
snip.......

"In the past two years, some states have violated the universal principles and laws of human rights by using the events of Sept. 11 and the war on international terrorism as a pretext," she said in a prepared acceptance speech.

"Regulations restricting human rights and basic freedoms ... have been justified and given legitimacy under the cloak of the war on terrorism."

Wearing no headscarf for the ceremony, the 56-year-old who won the $1.4 million prize for her work for the rights of women and children in Iran, lashed out at what she called breaches of the Geneva conventions at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay military jail.

Ebadi said Guantanamo prisoners had been "without the benefit of the rights stipulated under the international Geneva conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the (U.N.) International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights."

Ebadi, Iran's first female judge before the 1979 Islamic revolution forced her to step aside in favor of men, said it was worrying that human rights were violated by the same Western democracies that had initiated the principles.

5. Heartwarming
It is heartwarming to see the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize use the occasion of receiving her reward to point out that the American dictator has abused the trust placed in him after September 11.

Bush is not fighting a war on terror. He is fighting a series of colonial wars, planned and advocated by a rightwing cabal years ago, using the villainy of Osama bin Laden as cover. The invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism, and anybody who thinks that Bush didn't know that he was lying is naive.

Ms. Ebadi is right to point out the double standard that Bush invokles when he advocates "democracy" yet violates human rights conventions at every turn. She cites the prison camps at Guantanamo as a horrendous example of Bush's willful violation of human rights. However, we in this country know that a man who came to power through fraud and manipulation after losing an election is no democrat.

Today, Shirin Ebadi stands for the hope of democracy. Bush stands for tyranny.

9. The last thing the US wants in the ME are genuine democracies
Because pro-democracy activists there are absolutely hostile to
US imperialism.

I realy wish that one of PNACs supposed goals would come true:
Democracies would take over the current ME regimes.
That would bring about the end of US presnce and influence on that
region of the world!

12. the swipe she takes is at Bush!!
that's very clear! She better be careful; if the US conquers Iran (very unlikely..) she'll be on the "deck of cards" the Bushies put out. Dissent is not allowed in Bush's empire!!
