Bill would block environmental cleanup suits for bullet pollution

By DAVID ROYSE
Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --
Bullets at gun ranges may fall harmlessly to the ground after hitting or missing their target, but some say all the lead that builds up underground might not be so safe.

A measure approved Tuesday by a state House committee would protect gun range owners from regulators' efforts to get them to clean up lead contamination on their property - or on neighboring land or water.

The bill, approved by the House Judiciary Committee on an 8-4 vote, also would prevent shooting range owners from being sued for cleanup costs in state court.

Gun enthusiasts say the measure (HB 149) is needed to protect small businesses from regulatory agencies taking aim at them because of a sneaky antigun agenda. (snip/...)

1. the military should be made to clean up its environmental disasters too
they are by far the WORSE polluters we've got going. shameful that they don't take responsibility for it.

2. Playing devil's advocate here
I'm all for cleaning up environmental messes. But doesn't lead come from the ground? There isn't much done to it after it is mined. It's just smelted to draw off the other components that get mined with it.

If lead in the ground is a hazard, we are all in danger.

4. there is also the formation of carcinogenic nitrosoamines in the
soils....it is much more expensive to analyze for nitrosoamines, but if they do run the analyses, those carcinogenic compounds will be found....lead analyses is cheaper....

sadly, one of the BIG areas that shrub has eliminated is the chemical analyses of toxins...'no analyses, no problem' is the shrub approach....
