WASHINGTON -- The man credited with bringing about sweeping changes in aviation security after the Sept. 11 terror attacks is stepping down on Aug. 1.
Michael Jackson, the No. 2 person at the Transportation Department, said he will return to the private sector because of the time pressures of his job, made even more demanding by the long hospitalization of his boss, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.
Jackson plans to spend time with his wife and 8-year-old daughter in Virginia before deciding what his next steps will be, Transportation Department spokesman Leonardo Alcivar said on Tuesday.
Jackson ran the day-to-day operations of the department while Mineta recovered from back surgery last winter. He was viewed by some as a probable successor to Mineta, the only Democrat in the Bush administration.
