Michael J. Fox to be guest of congressman at President Bush’s State of the Union speech

Michael J. Fox, whose advocacy ads created a stir in last fall’s elections, will attend President Bush’s State of the Union address next week as a guest of Rhode Island Rep. Jim Langevin.

Both are staunch supporters of embryonic stem-cell research.
Fox, 45, suffers from Parkinson’s disease. As the 2006 elections neared, he appeared in television campaign ads for political candidates who support the research.

“Congressman Langevin is a tireless champion for the advancement of medical research, and I am honored to join him next week at the State of the Union,” the actor said in a statement.

Langevin, who has been confined to a wheelchair since an accidental shooting that occurred when he was a teenager, addressed his colleagues in the House of Representatives last week in support of a bill that would bolster embryonic stem cell research.

1. Look for the comedian Rush Limbaugh to pounce
Good for MJF! Hope the Capitol Police don't throw him out before the speech.

4. Look for RW criticism if he takes his meds or if he doesn't take his meds.
Maybe even more footage of Rushbo mocking him.

8. This could be interesting ...
if he wore an "anti-war" t-shirt under his jacket ... see if he would be "escorted out" like Cindy Sheehan was (actually arrested, unlike the Repuke congressman's wife who was nicely escorted out and NOT ARRESTED) when the jacket was removed ...

9. I wonder if the TV cameras will pan to Mr. Fox at a key moment?
How the media treats this should be interesting.

12. Great for Michael J Fox who has led
this amazing fight to get stem cell research to help fight Parkinson's and other diseases that could be wiped out.

Our Gov Elliot Spitzer is going to put some money where his mouth is!

13. Note to reporters: Rep. Langevin *uses* a wheelchair
Langevin, who has been confined to a wheelchair since an accidental shooting that occurred when he was a teenager,

The phrase "confined to a wheelchair" is as obsolete as, say, "Negro" or "Oriental". How the proper usage, a person who "uses a wheelchair", has not made it into AP Style by now, I cannot tell you. :P

16. Agreed
"Confined" is what I am when my wheelchair is out for repairs.

"Freedom" is the name I gave my first wheelchair the day it arrived.
