Guardsmen serving in war zones await late pay
The Associated Press
Posted : Sunday Feb 18, 2007 12:58:47 EST

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — More than one-fifth of 500 Connecticut National Guard soldiers of the 102nd Infantry serving in war zones are owed thousands of dollars in incentive pay that is months overdue.

The Assignment Incentive Pay of $1,000 a month is paid to Reserve or National Guard soldiers who volunteer to extend active duty beyond 24 months.

Lt. Col. John Whitford of the Connecticut National Guard confirmed that about 110 soldiers are owed amounts between $2,000 and $17,000. He attributed the delay to a “bureaucratic-administrative issue” at the federal level.

The 1st Battalion of the 102nd left Connecticut for Fort Bragg in January 2006 and for Afghanistan the following April ...

11. I wrote to him, Dodd,
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 11:28 AM by REACTIVATED IN CT
and all our CT Congressmen yesterday about this. THen I wrote to Murtha, Patrick Murphy and Hillary - she won't read my email because I am not from her district.

"We heard a lot on the floor of the House about supporting the troops this week. Now its time to put words into action. The CT National Guard members are owed Assignment Incentive Pay that was promised to them . According to the New Haven Register (http://www.nhregister.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17865908... ) this amounts to $1,000 a month paid to Reserve or National Guard soldiers who volunteer to extend active duty beyond 24 months.

Please help them to get the pay that they were promised."

edited to add my letter

5. That's not good
The shortest route between a loyal unit in combat and mutiny is not paying them.

6. Is it any wonder few people are rushing into the recruiting offices to join?
However, if you're ambulatory (not dependent on a power chair), the military will sign you up to kill and die in Dear Leader's Oil Wars. :P

9. well it's certainly not the magnitude of the expense that's holding back the checks
Hell, it's what, maybe $3 million at most spread among 110 people? That's chicken feed. That's nothing. That's a tiny fraction of the cash the bushies "misplaced" in Baghdad just for fun.

Nope, the only reason these guys aren't getting paid is the people who write the checks just... don't... care.

Support the troops? Fuck, they won't even pay the troops.

15. What?! Perhaps there weren't any cargo planes available?
...to fly pallets of cash to Iraq?

Or is that method of payment only for Bush's gang of black-marketeers...

16. Default on the contract
If the other party to a contract you're in defaults on that contract, you're no longer obligated to keep up your end of things. I'd say these guys should come on home.

21. You know what happens to armies that don't get paid?
History shows there's a significant reaction to not getting paid as promised for putting your life on the line.

Mutiny.
