Priests to Purify Site After Bush Visit
Priests to Purify Site After Bush Visit
Mar 9th - 12:21am

By JUAN CARLOS LLORCA
Associated Press Writer

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.

Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.

Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites _ which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles _ would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.

17. We're going to need a freaking exorcist...
to remove the evil demons from the White House. Bush has so corrupted those hallowed halls it may need to be razed and we'll have to have a new one constructed. That much evil is bound to leave a malevolent residue on anything it touches. I would NOT want to be the first President to inhabit the place after Bush's evil presence, that's for sure. :scared: It would be like, The Amityville Horror, on steroids.

Priests purified Ghandi's shrine after a Bush too. They were upset that it had been allowed to be defiled by dogs that sniffed over the place before Bush's visit.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1642376,001302100000.htm

New Delhi, March 5, 2006

Hindu priests, who take care of the Gandhi memorial, have conducted a purification ceremony at the shrine so as to cleanse it after it was scoured by Bush's sniffer-dogs.

<snip>

Bush had visited the memorial on Thursday during his three-day visit to India. The site, where Gandhi was cremated, is considered sacred and it is mandatory for all visitors to remove their shoes before entering the premises.

The dogs, flown in from the US, were part of the intense security for the president, but the Hindu priests believed they tainted the site.

Letting dogs into the memorial also drew sharp protests from Hindu politicians and Gandhi's great grandson Tushar Gandhi, who called the incident a "national shame."

1) War greatly enhances their grip on power. On 9-11 Bush-Rove-Cheney wondered...What took them so long.

2) War boosts profits for the kinds of companies they love: Oil and Defense, the kinds of companies that stuff gazillions into Republican pockets.

64. Maya to 'cleanse' sacred site after Bush visit
<clips>

Mayan leaders will spiritually "cleanse" ancient ruins in Guatemala after a visit by US President George Bush, unpopular because of foreign policies going back to Central America's civil wars.

The leaders said they would hold a spiritual ceremony to restore "peace and harmony" at the Mayan ruins of Iximche after Bush tours the site on Monday.

"No, Mr Bush, you cannot trample and degrade the memory of our ancestors," said indigenous leader Rodolfo Pocop during a press conference. "This is not your ranch in Texas."

Bush will arrive on Sunday night in Guatemala, his second-to-last stop on a five-country tour of Latin America, where his approval ratings are low. His visit sparked violent protests in Brazil and Colombia. Social groups are organising marches against his visit to Guatemala.

On Friday, some 150 student protesters blocked off a street in Guatemala City near two US fast food outlets to burn an American flag and set off firecrackers.

"We've burned this flag for what the Yankee did all over the world. We remember the CIA's policy in our country, which promoted scorched-earth policies and the bloodshed of our people," the protest leader shouted, standing on a car.

70. Bush Must Support Accountability in Guatemala
<clips>

Washington , March 9, 2007–The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) today urged President Bush to make justice and accountability for human rights abuses a priority during his upcoming visit to Guatemala, particularly by emphasizing support for the legal cases against General Efraín Ríos Montt and members of his military high command.

“The case against Ríos Montt is not only about addressing some of the worst crimes committed in this hemisphere in the last century. It is also involves tackling the ongoing problem of impunity, and demonstrating that Ríos Montt’s ties to organized crime do not put him above the law,” said NISGUA National Organizer Andrew de Sousa.

Legal proceedings in both Guatemalaand Spainare attempting to hold the former dictator and his military high command responsible for genocide and other gross human rights violations. President Bush’s visit to Guatemalathis weekend comes at a pivotal time in these cases, with Ríos Montt planning to launch a run for the Guatemalan Congress on May 2 in a bid to gain immunity from prosecution in the national court system. Although holding a seat in Congress will not legally block the extradition of Ríos Montt to Spain, it will likely kill any political will to bring such a powerful figure to justice.

“Ríos Montt serves as a highly visible example of the fact that if you are corrupt and brutal enough, you are guaranteed impunity in Guatemala. We see the consequences of this phenomenon play out every day, as continued threats and attacks against civil society leaders are never investigated or prosecuted by the authorities,” said Catherine Norris of NISGUA’s Guatemala Accompaniment Project.

President Bush’s tour of Latin America is intended to reestablish U.S. influence in the region, but serious conflicts remain between the image the Bush Administration is trying to portray this week and its actual policies over the past six years. In Guatemala, the Administration has been supporting the physical harassment and suspension of civil rights in rural communities under the guise of the Drug War, pushing for Congress to increase training and funding of the deeply corrupt security forces, and limiting economic opportunities and access to affordable medicines through the DR-Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).

While international arrest warrants for Ríos Montt and his military high command have been in effect in the U.S.since last year, the Bush Administration has yet to publicly acknowledge the warrants or show support for legal initiatives in Guatemala. Given the strategic importance of Guatemala’s relationship with the U.S., any message from President Bush supporting anti-impunity efforts and the prosecution of Rios Montt would have a strong impact on the ground in Guatemala.
