One of the Commanders of Dagestani volunteers/Mujahideen, fighting in Chechnya against Russian troops, contacted Kavkaz Center news and information agency over the phone and reported that he was staying in touch over the radio with the unit of Mujahideen who carried out a successful combat operation in Tsuti District of Dagestan. The Commander reported that this is a joint Chechen-Dagestani special unit, which is carrying out a planned combat operation on the territory of Dagestan. The Commander says that the operation was successful and no casualties were incurred by the Mujahideen.



He also confirmed that about 10 invaders were killed and about the same number wounded during a combat that happened in the morning at the frontier post. He strongly denied the report of the Russian side that the Mujahideen allegedly beheaded the chief of the border patrol Radim Halikov and called this report a cheap provocation.



«Why behead a dead person? He got his bullet in the combat anyway and Allah is his Judge from now on. Russians announced the name of a Dagestani on purpose in order to arouse a doubt in the souls of the Dagestanis. But today only an enemy of Islam or a stupid person can doubt that our actions are just», the Dagestani Commander stated.



He refused to tell how many commandos are in the unit operating in Dagestan and what the name of the Commander is. At the same time he pointed out that the Commander is famous among the Mujahideen. The Dagestani Commander did not specify how long the unit will remain on the territory of Dagestan and whether there are other combat missions assigned. The Commander deemed it necessary to mention that this is not the first or the last operation of this kind.

2. Separatists.

Dagestan is a province/region of the Russian Empire Federation, that's close to Chechnya, and into which quite a bit of fighting has spread. As you can see from the story, it's a Muslim area, which is not really ethnically or culturally Russian, and in fact unrest/fighting for its control has happened before -- in the 1800s!
The whole thing is like Iraq + Palestine + Afghanistan + Vietnam + Stalingrad morphed together --- a bloody conflict w/plenty of crimes to go around, urban combat, a quagmire in which the Russian Army has been stuck for 10 years or so now, on and off, and which has been spilling w/terrorism into the heart of the country, with attacks just hundreds of meters away from the Kremlin.
