10 U.S. troops die in Iraq; 6 on Sunday

By STEVEN R. HURST, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 8 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - The powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ordered his militiamen on Sunday to redouble their battle to oust American forces and argued that
Iraq's army and police should join him in defeating "your archenemy." The U.S. military announced the weekend deaths of 10 American soldiers, including six killed on Sunday.

Security remained so tenuous in the capital on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the U.S. capture of Baghdad that Iraq's military declared a 24-hour ban on all vehicles in the capital from 5 a.m. Monday. The government quickly reinstated Monday as a holiday, just a day after it had decreed that April 9 no longer would be a day off.

Among the 10 U.S. deaths announced Sunday were three soldiers killed by a roadside bomb while patrolling south of Baghdad; one killed in an attack south of the capital; and two who died of combat wounds sustained north of the capital, in Diyala and Salahuddin provinces. On Saturday, the military said, four U.S. soldiers were killed in an explosion near their vehicle in Diyala.

At least 3,280 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians.

4. AWOL Busche to Speaker Pelosi (about his - and Chainey's - $urge):
From: http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/9744.html
~~snip~~
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that President George W. Bush did not consult her before announcing his new strategy for the war in Iraq — a sign that, despite the cozy rhetoric, the relationship between Washington’s two powerhouses has already had its share of friction.

In an interview, Pelosi also said she was puzzled by what she considered the president’s minimalist explanation for his confidence in the new surge of 21,500 U.S. troops that he has presented as the crux of a new “way forward” for U.S. forces in Iraq.

“He’s tried this two times — it’s failed twice,” the California Democrat said. “I asked him at the White House, ‘Mr. President, why do you think this time it’s going to work?’ And he said, ‘Because I told them it had to.’ ” (emphasis added)

Asked if the president had elaborated, she added that he simply said, ” ‘I told them that they had to.’ That was the end of it. That’s the way it is.”

...

2799422, 6 Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Six Canadian soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan, Prime Minister Stephen Harper confirmed on Sunday.

No names or hometowns of the soldiers involved have been released. Earlier in the day, NATO reported that six soldiers had been killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand province.

...
Since 2002, 51 Canadian soldiers and a diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan, where Canada has more than 2,000 troops, with the majority in the southern province of Kandahar.
...
The main thrust of the offensive in Helmand province is being handled by British and American troops, with Canadian soldiers offering backup and security. About 5,000 soldiers in all are engaging the Taliban, including elements of Afghanistan's army.

In February, the Taliban said it has 6,000 fighters ready for a spring offensive and could dramatically increase that number if necessary.

Ironically, our PM is in France today re-opening the Vimy Ridge memorial, which commemmorates a WWI battle that had about 10,000 Canadian casualties in three days. The media had been a bit too much on the "glory of war" side, in my opinion. This is a sobering reminder.

15. This is the highest per day rate since March 03 the invasion month
The casualty rate is 5.12 per day so far this month. This is only the 8th of April and the U.S. has already lost 35 and the UK 6. If it keeps going at this rate it may well be a record breaking month!

Last year in first 3 months U.S. lost 148. This year 244. Yeah things are getting rosier alright. :sarcasm:

25. actually that might have been just a bad translation
Juan Cole write:
Thousands of followers of young Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr converged on Najaf Monday, planning to join rallies against continued US military occupation of Iraq. April 9 is the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad to US forces. Although some journalists are writing that al-Sadr called for violent attacks on US troops, the communique he released on Sunday simply says that Iraqi Army troops and Mahdi Army militiamen should not fight one another and should not allow the Americans to manipulate them.

more here http://www.juancole.com/2007/04/10-us-troops-killed-thousands-of.html

He's usually right about these things, I hope for our troops and the Iraqi's sake he right about this as many will die if Sadr's men start fighting openly again. Then again we are just delaying the inevitable at this point, its so damn pointless.
