Jihadist Video Shows Boy Beheading Man
Source: AP

KILI FAQIRAN, Pakistan (AP) -- The boy with the knife looks barely 12. In a high-pitched voice, he denounces the bound, blindfolded man before him as an American spy. Then he hacks off the captive's head to cries of "God is great!" and hoists it in triumph by the hair.

A video circulating in Pakistan records the grisly death of Ghulam Nabi, a Pakistani militant accused of betraying a top Taliban official who was killed in a December airstrike in Afghanistan.

An Associated Press reporter confirmed Nabi's identity by visiting his family in Kili Faqiran, their remote village in southwestern Pakistan.

The video, which was obtained by AP Television News in the border city of Peshawar on Tuesday, appears authentic and is unprecedented in jihadist propaganda because of the youth of the executioner.

We have problems here (obviously considering the horrific events of this past week), but pointing to our own as a way to deflect attention from injustices abroad is just a way to avoid facing the problem.

Unfortunately, all too often on DU it is impossible to criticize what happens elsewhere, without being accused of being a neocon enabler or whatever else.

43. not interested in ignorant bigotry, thanks

Anybody who wants to talk this way about any "they" should find a quarter and call someone who is interested, I'd suggest.

The same applies to ignorant statements about women's groups. I imagine you have access to Google; you might benefit from using it.

Meanwhile, the charmer to whom you originally referred is still working for the right-wing think tank I named.

I guess the USAmerican right wing is just overwhelmed with concern about women's rights and well-being, while women's groups keep their eyes fixed on their knitting.

6. Read the story. This is the information.
A continuous 2 1/2-minute shot then shows the victim lying on his side on a patch of rubble-strewn ground. A man holds Nabi by his beard while the boy, wearing a camouflage military jacket and oversized white sneakers, cuts into the throat. Other men and boys call out "Allahu akbar!" - "God is great!" - as blood spurts from the wound.

The film, overlain with jihadi songs, then shows the boy hacking and slashing at the man's neck until the head is severed.

8. Yeah..
I just finished reading my first post was a reaction without information from the article.

I have to say that my gut instinct is that this video is an effort of "someone" to emote anger and disgust towards the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Although this feeling came upon me gradually while reading the article, the last two paragraphs have increased my suspicious.

snip>

He noted the Taliban had teenage combatants but they were not recruited on a large scale because of the availability of adult fighters. He said he had seen children in the background of some jihadist videos but none in which they were directly involved in violence.

"I don't know why they would do this," Zarifi said. "The Taliban have to some extent tried to play to the public in Afghanistan and have not engaged in the complete sowing of mayhem that we have seen in Iraq. But this kind of act is really egregious. It's off the charts."

snip>

"off the charts"? How do you say that in Afghani??

26. The language was probably Pashto.
(With a few variant spellings.)

Note that the Pakistani press in the last 2-3 months has had more than a couple reports of a few different incidents in the NWFP: "Activists" coming in and requesting of headmasters, at gunpoint, if they can "recruit for jihad". They usually take a few kids if none volunteer. In one case the headmaster said they couldn't go into classes and "recruit", so they kidnapped his son.

Edited on Sat Apr-21-07 09:55 PM by Moochy
No that's not what I'm saying. These vile groups have 100% of the responsibility for their actions. I did not watch the video. The war in Afghanistan took a real back seat to Iraq.. and that is GWB's fault. Is it America's fault that the Taliban are resurgent? The mission never had the troops necessary to fully defeat them while guarding the borders. Was that goal even attainable? And would that even have made pakistan's tribal areas less ... radical? But we back Musharraf who is unwilling and/or unable to stop these forces in his own country.

30. I agree 100% with everything you say
I apologize for assuming you were blaming the US for everything as I have found plenty of people here ready to do just that.

Bush totally dropped the ball on Al Queda. When you have supposed allies like Pakistan giving shelter to Al Queda and other radical groups while we look the other way, it's hard to take a war on terror seriously. Not to mention our cozy relationship with Saudi Arabia which finances so many of these groups.

I don't know what the answer is to videos such as this. But we can't close our eyes to the fact there are a lot of seriously disturbed people who do want to do us plenty of harm.

27. The madaris?
Edited on Sat Apr-21-07 08:25 PM by igil
No, the US armed, trained, and funded various jihadist groups. Some formed AQ after the fact under bin Ladin, a bit player on the field but important in doling out riyals.

For the madaris, you have two different things going. First, Deobandi Islam, which came about for the same reason Wahhabism came along. Deobandi Islam as practiced is a wretched thing; some of the bits I've read lead me to think that the followers picked and chose which early writings (from the 1800s) were taken as definitive.

The Sa'udis are more than willing--and have been since the '60s--to fund them, with a few changes to the program. They got a big boost under ul-Haq, the father of the Taliban: he Islamized the ISI and made the "Islamic state" rather intolerant; his followers rather hate the "moderate and enlightened Islam" that Musharraf is trying to foster.

One can be revolted by the first, or by the second, or by both ...

Sometimes how one reacts, to which, depends on who and where one is and thus what one's understanding of the meaning of the images is. Sometimes it depends on something else.

on edit

Of course, there are always pix like these by which to gauge one's reaction:

"All the civilians killed by the Israelis had been ordered to abandon their homes in the border village by the Israelis themselves a few hours earlier. Leave, they were told by loudspeaker; and leave they did, 20 of them in a convoy of civilian cars. That's when the Israeli jets arrived to bomb them, killing 20 Lebanese, at least nine of them children. The local fire brigade could not put out the fires as they all burned alive in the inferno. Another "terrorist" target had been eliminated.
- Robert Fisk"

Insert nationality of your choice, and consider your reaction; people's babies are killed by other people's bombs and weapons. Does how one feels about someone's baby being dressed up in military gear depend on how much one cares about that baby being killed by someone else's bullets?

25. The Bush administration trusted the Pakistanis to "guard the border"
during the Tora Bora operation to capture Bin Laden.

The reason they had to do this is because the bulk of the US military was on standby to invade Iraq, a country that was not a threat to the US.

This was the most absurd plan and at that point, I knew that Bush had no intention of catching Bin Laden.

The oil was most important.

31. The Taliban and Al-Quiada
should have been destroyed completely before any responsible US government even considered going after Saddam. Bush placed "tried to kill by Daddy" over the deaths of 3000 Americans. It boggles my mind that at best only 10% of Americans really grasp that fact. Bush placed family matters and cronyism over eliminating the real enemy. And they are the enemy of civilization for sure.

48. The Taliban hold on any country needs to be completely destroyed
This is what life was/is like for women under Taliban rule. They are truly monsters.

Some of the restrictions the Taliban have placed upon Women:

Ban on studying at school, university or any other educational institution.
6.

24.
