Prospects receding of G8 climate change deal

Prospects receded for a deal on climate change at the Group of Eight summit when a top US official today predicted that there would be no agreement yet.

Combatting climate change is the number one objective set by the G8 host, Angela Merkel. The German Chancellor has staked her country's G8 presidency on persuading counterparts to agree to limit the global temperature rise to 2C (3.6F). She also wants to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent compared with 1990 levels by 2050.

But James Connaughton, chairman of the White House-run US Council on Environmental Quality, said today that the United States could not agree to long-term targets being fixed because all nations have to be involved in any accord.

4. things get worse in 2008
Germany, aka West + East Germany,
can claim it is under Kyoto limits,
bacause of shuttered Soviet era industy.

no such luck for 2008's host, Japan
