U.S. Halts Alaska Oil Shipments
Thu January 1, 2004 09:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States suspended oil shipments for two days from Alaska's major port of Valdez as a security precaution amid a heightened terror alert, officials said on Thursday.

The halt of oil transfers onto tankers began on Tuesday and was lifted on Thursday. It was part of "a continuing effort to ensure the security of our homeland," consistent with Code Orange, the second-highest alert level the United States has been at since Dec. 21, said Russ Knocke, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman.

"Right now we are allowing tanker traffic throughout the port," Lt. jg Latarsha McQueen of the Coast Guard's Valdez Marine Safety Office said. "Appropriate safety measures are being taken with regard to the security information that we have."

It was not clear what specifically triggered the decision to suspend the traffic.

1. For the record
most of the real threat is not airline related, we have hardened those targets, but the ports are not... because George refuses to aknoweldge the problem

2. Maybe all the oil tanker pilots were
drunk or hung-over from New Year's celebrations.

3. There will be a series of events...
...like this right up until the election, and the threat level will never go below orange.

It is essential to Bush's election plans that there be a substantial block of undecided voters scared out of their wits and willing to cut their own throats Constitutionally and economically, if only Big Daddy Will Make the Bad Men Stop.

He can't run on his record.
He can't run on his vision.
He can only run on Fear of The Other, and what The Other wants to do to us.

4. Much of Alaskan oil is ear marked for Japan.
Those who refuse to buy our tainted beef. I seem to remember cutting off this same countries' energy supply in the forties with less than spectacular results.

I'm indeed a bitter and suspicious old man to still be connecting the dots like this.

8. Sounds right to me
And sadly it sounds exactly like the kinds of stunts that we have all come to know and laugh at from this bunch of Bozo's.

9. I never knew about this ...
Thanks for the info. Sounds like a way to "get even" with Japan's 7 year beef boycott!

However, there is probably more beef to be sold than oil out of Alaska. Hey, we need that $$$$ too don't we *? Why not send it here to America where people can really use it at a lower price? Naw, can't do that - might pacify the masses!

12. Not sure where you are coming from.
Do you think we should try and force Japan into buying our meat? They get far more oil from middle east than from Alaska. I think a move like cutting off their oil shipments to try and force them into buying what they consider tainted meat would not go well with the rest of the world. But what does Bush* care about the rest of the world?

14. Along with lots of chatter and creditable intelligence reports -
....it makes sense to me that Japan must suffer for not buying our tainted cows that would gag a maggot.

13. How much more of this crap will we see in this election year?
We spent most of the spring and summer with no terror alerts after we invaded iraq.
Now that the war has proven to be a miserable failure, Afghanistan falling into chaos and Bush polls are in the basement, we start getting changes in the national color code.

Bush has to get his numbers up and they raise when the color code changes because people mistakenly assume Bush is on thejob. forget that any follow-up on the alerts show there was no basis for the action, like the Christmas grounding of flights into America...Turns out is was a ratings grab by Rove and company.

By November 2004, the color code will change so much it should be placed on a wheel-of-fortune wheel and spun daily...like an O'Really news show.
