Pentagon won't make surge recommendation to Bush

By Nancy A. Youssef, McClatchy Newspapers 2 hours, 58 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — In a sign that top commanders are divided over what course to pursue in Iraq , the Pentagon said Wednesday that it won't make a single, unified recommendation to President Bush during next month's strategy assessment, but instead will allow top commanders to make individual presentations.

"Consensus is not the goal of the process," Geoff Morrell , a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters. "If there are differences, the president will hear them."

Military analysts called the move unusual for an institution that ordinarily does not air its differences in public, especially while its troops are deployed in combat.

"The professional military guys are going to the non-professional military guys and saying 'Resolve this,'" said Jeffrey White , a military analyst for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy . "That's what it sounds like."

White said it suggests tha

5. So it looks like the military is ready to put the brakes on this
At least we can hope if Bush tries to start a war with Iran they'll dig in their heels and tell him to stuff it.

7. I think even the pentagon
knows we have reached critical mass with this war and are preparing for withdrawal. They can see which way the public wind is blowing.

8. They're out of troops.
The only thing the surge did was to speed up the end of this disaster.

10. There will be a few....
the ubiquitous "apple polishers", that will prostitute themselves for career advancement and give the "surge" glowing reports. THOSE are the ones Bush will listen to and he'll categorically reject all the rest.

Bush is the "cherry pickers' cherry picker" after all. :puke:

11. Bullseye
At this point, anyone who thinks that the Bush administration can absorb, analyze and come up with a coherent plan out of conflicting data, recommendations and opinions has to be just plain loony. The apple polishers are going to present the ongoing case for war and profiteering (and, oh yeah, death, destruction and waste, but let's not speak of that). What's less obvious is that the actual human beings in the Pentagon, the one or two guys who actually do care about the men and women getting killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, will consign us to another 18 months of the same old, same old with their lily-livered failure to advocate forcefully for what they know is the right thing to do.

12. Cherry picking is what came to my mind
The Pentagon must not know who they're dealing with if they believe this: "If there are differences, the president will hear them."

Can't hear you, neener, neener bomb, bomb, bomb bomb bomb Iran...
