Weekly jobless claims tally up again
Source: MSNBC/AP

WASHINGTON - The number of laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose last week in another worrisome sign that the labor market is weakening.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that new claims for unemployment benefits rose by 4,000 last week to 319,000. It marked the sixth increase in the past seven weeks and was a further sign that the economy is feeling the impact of a steep slump in housing and a spreading credit crisis.

1. I've had to lay off 6 out of 14 of my staff in the last two months.
And was told to chop one more before November.

All due to weak sales because of a "depressed economy" we are told by our multi-millionaire CEO.

11. I'm a Creative Director.
I've been in Design for 27 years and I have found that creative's jobs are an excellent bellwether of the state of the economy.

That's where corporations cut jobs first.

Not looking good.

3. Man that must be tough on you
Good luck and I hope sales turn around. A good friend of mine just had his position "eliminated" as a cost cutting move.

10. Ironically, he's touched nothing.
But he's probably been in support of some who are appearing to help wreck it.

Mind you, offering big loans to people who couldn't really pay more than the minimums at the time, before the rates starting to adjust was dumb too - and they should have been a little more frugal...

Of course, if it's a "global market", then the US will definitely not crash; the rest of the world is making up our so-called "slack". CBS and other media sources have already said this when reporting corporate profits.

12. Touched nothing?
His tax-breaks-for-billionaires destroyed this country's economy. It was the single most destructive move ever made.

6. That sounds like we're hitting the 10% mark
even with the fudged (being kind) numbers the * administration puts out (fucking regan)
the jobless rate is horrifyingly huge!

God have mercy, because I don't think anyone else will.

7. Something's fishy...
The BLS tables aren't accessible in the same format they used to be... the data cited here (http://www.exponentialimprovement.com/cms/unemploy.shtml) indicates that the real unemployment rate in June of '06 was 12.3%... but on the only table I can find now at bls.gov, the historical date shows a real unemployment rate of 8.7%. The "official" unemployment rate (4.8%) exactly matches what was shown there. Where did that other information disappear to?

As for the "official" unemployment rate... here's a good article explaining how it's misleading.

9. Canada's unemployment is the lowest in 35 years
I swear the Canadian economy could absorb a million workers and not blink (other than housing shortages).

CBC warned this morning that you need to get your accreditation up here otherwise you'll be stacking boxes for a living.
