Bush seeks new image on global warming

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 51 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Myth: The president refuses to admit that climate change is real and that humans are a factor. Myth: The U.S. is doing nothing to address climate change. Myth: The United States refuses to engage internationally.

So begins a hand-sized handout, easy for reporters to pocket, issued at the State Department where President Bush on Friday was to cap two days of talks at a White House-sponsored climate change conference that is as much about salesmanship as it is about diplomacy.

Unwilling to cut U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases, which make up a fourth of the world's total output, Bush is turning to China, India and the other biggest polluters to swap green technology and other voluntary ways of doing something about global warming.

His administration also has set about creating a process for more such talks and a possible long-term global goal for reducing emissions, with each nation permitted to draw up its own strategies and plans.

1. Myth 2 = true. Myth 3 = true.

Myth 1 = well, first of all, it's a fact, not a myth!

RW spinners at their "best" = muddy everything up until the idjiauts can't find the truth through all their mud.

3. Key word in the headline is "Image"
He isn't going to do anything meaningful. it would cost his Corporate Masters way too much money.

No, * just wants to change the "image"; he wants people to think he is doing something and taking it seriously.

Nothing new here. No change in policy, just a change in marketing.

The oil people, the defense people, now, they get the actuality.

4. Good luck to him in selling this one
How many times over the last seven years have we heard the Chimp use "flawed science" in relation to global warming? Too many to count. Maybe the administration can come up with an acronym like Global War on Global Warming (GWarGWar) and try to sell it that way. I, for one, am not buying.

Pretty fitting...

However, it's pretty insulting to Gwar, though.

6. New image = Old image
He'll throw a hissyfit, tell the world how things REALLY need to be, and that limiting pollution would be harmful to corporations, and endangers democracy and freedoms around the globe.

He will say all this and more while trying to give someone a shoulder rub while he's also kissing a bald guy, and then will leave to go on a bathroom break by trying to open a fake locked door.

8. This issue of gw isn't about..
image or debate.

It's a fait accompli that neither conversation,
debate, or image will change or stop.

Perhaps some of its damaging and harmful
effects could be mitigated with immediate
and continual -action-, but even that would
be limited.

There are way too many words, debates, and
discussions on serious, critical problems that
need to be addressed and ACTED on NOW,
including global warming, over-development,
healthcare, and so on.

17. Wow! I actually agree with the White House about something!

Very small, pocket-sized handouts (business card sized) are an excellent idea. I've noticed that the groups trying to educate people about sustainable fisheries have cards to refer to when you're at a restaurant. I made up a bunch when I was lobbying some local politicians last year on global warming, and got a positive response. It took a lot of folding (can cut a standard 8.5x11 page down the long axis and make two handouts this way) -- but if the layout is good and you make it bright and attractive with nice colors, they appear professional and people will look at them.

As far as this specific story goes, though -- I'm completely opposed to all the stuff the Bushies wrote on those handouts!

"WASHINGTON - Myth: The president refuses to admit that climate change is real and that humans are a factor. Myth: The U.S. is doing nothing to address climate change. Myth: The United States refuses to engage internationally.
So begins a hand-sized handout, easy for reporters to pocket, issued at the State Department where President Bush on Friday was to cap two days of talks at a White House-sponsored climate change conference that is as much about salesmanship as it is about diplomacy."
