A Georgetown University sophomore, implicated in a gay-bashing by a fellow student, has ties to the Bush Administration, PageOneQ has learned.

19-year-old Philip Anderton Cooney, pictured here in the spring of 2005, is the son of fallen Bush aide and American Petroleum Institute oil lobbyist Phil Cooney.

That's absurd, of course. And yet, pretty much every incident of gay bashing (or homophobia in general) that makes the news is met with the analysis that the perps must "have issues themselves," or some such thing. Even here on DU, that response appears every time something like this makes the news. It's discouraging and offensive. x(

its impossible to judge a person's sexual orientation based upon their looks or dress. Its a terrible stereotype that i wouldn't expect to find here used by people who claim to be progressive or accepting of homosexuality.

What we DON'T accept is closet gays who don't have the courage to admit it...and take up gay-bashing to punish those "uncloseted" gays for living their lives freely.

As for supposedly not being able to tell if someone's gay...even gay people themselves often speak about "gay-dar". So now I suppose gay people are bigoted and ignorant about each other? :eyes:
