ReutersWASHINGTON, - The White House has "serious concerns" about a Democratic proposal that would extend federal retraining assistance to more workers who have lost their jobs because of trade, the U.S. Labor Department said on Monday.
"We have serious concerns with provisions in the draft legislation Chairman (Charles) Rangel has released," a spokeswoman for the Labor Department said. "We look forward to continuing a dialogue with Congress on these issues."
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, has proposed a multibillion-dollar expansion of the decades-old trade adjustment assistance program and has scheduled committee action on the legislation on Wednesday.
A fight between the White House and Congress over how much to expand the program could hurt the Bush administration's chances of winning approval of pending free trade agreements with Peru, Colombia, Panama and South Korea.
