Orange County Sheriff Indicted
From Associated Press
October 30, 2007 2:52 PM EDT

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona has been indicted on federal corruption charges, and is accused of using his office for financial gain, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The 10-count indictment, unsealed Tuesday, contends the sheriff, his wife, an attorney and two other associates schemed to get Carona elected so they could use his office to enrich themselves.

<snip>

U.S. attorney spokesman Thom Mrozek says Carona, his wife Deborah and the attorney, Debra Hoffman, are expected to surrender to federal authorities on Wednesday.

Carona's criminal attorney, H. Dean Steward, told The Associated Press that he had not been contacted by the U.S. attorney about any charges, sealed or not.

2. Is sheriff an elected position with a political affiliation attached?
I'm not American, so I'm not sure how it works in your land.

But if the sheriff of Orange County has any political affiliation at all, I'd take a wild stab in the dark that he's a Republican.

5. This has been brewing for awhile and, yes, he is a Republican!
I'm glad it's finally moving forward. There was a little girl kidnapped and murdered here several years ago. Mike Carona was on every TV channel shamelessly grandstanding this horrific case and using it for his own political ends. It's no surprise that he is a crook as well as a blow-hard.

Sheriff Charged With Accepting Bribes
Tuesday, October 30, 2007 9:26 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By GILLIAN FLACCUS Associated Press Writer

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Orange County's sheriff has been charged with accepting bribes in exchange for political favors and pressing a witness to lie as authorities investigated whether he used his office to enrich himself.

The case against Michael S. Carona purportedly involves more than $350,000 in cash and gifts, as well as a "get out of jail free card" for a wealthy appointee whose son was arrested twice, according to a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday. Also named in the indictment were Carona's wife and a woman identified as his longtime mistress.

Carona gained national attention during an investigation into the 2002 kidnapping and killing of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion, and a year later had been mentioned as a possible Republican candidate for lieutenant governor.

During a five-minute interview with The Associated Press, the couple would not respond to most questions — including those about Carona's alleged infidelity — on the advice of his attorneys, who were present.

12. More on the christian conservative sheriff ---
Carona is a self-styled “conservative Christian.” But since last spring, he’s been plagued by leaks suggesting that he’s used his position as the county’s top cop to lure women into bed. Never mind that some of the allegations against him have been made under oath by people who face perjury charges if they’ve lied, or that the sheriff has refused recorded interviews by police detectives. His crisis-management lawyers say the sheriff is unconcerned.

In reality, the sheriff is panicked, says Cavallo, the sheriff’s friend and drinking buddy for 26 years. He says Carona’s family-values reputation is a façade. Married with one teenage son, Carona prays the public won’t learn that he is, as Cavallo calls him, a serial adulterer.

I remember that one being the son of an Orange County sheriff. Maybe it's his predecessor.

21. Linked.
According to federal prosecutors, the sheriff used his public office to accept cash and other forms of bribes for years; lied to the IRS about the money; and recently attempted to get a co-conspirator, ex-Assistant Sheriff Donald Haidl, to lie to a federal grand jury.

“The defendants schemed to get Carona elected and to corruptly use the office of sheriff to enrich themselves,” according to federal prosecutors Brett A. Sagel and Kenneth B. Julian, who allege that the crime plot began in 1998. Other allegations are that Haidl, a wealthy used-car salesman, gave Carona “regular monthly payments of $1,000,” fraudulent campaign contributions, a yacht, loans, gifts, private jet trips and a luxury vacation to Lake Tahoe. FBI agents say bribes totaled more than $350,000. In exchange, they say Haidl got appointed assistant sheriff and obtained special treatment in the Orange County Jail for his gang-rapist son, Gregory Scott Haidl.

17. Well, that's nice. I'll be spending a week in Orange county in a few months.
Hopefully they'll have a new sheriff. A couple of years ago I was there for a convention and was awakened by the sound of three people in the alley below my windows... when I looked out, I saw one woman in a maid uniform smoking crack while another was "servicing" a man in a cowboy hat behind a nearby dumpster. The pipe was then passed around and they split up, with the cowboy-hatted man yelling "thank ya ladies!" and the two uniformed women returning to the back entrance of the hotel where they worked, presumably. Freaking wild west, indeed.
