NYC Term Limits to Stay the Same

NEW YORK (AP) -- City Council term limits are here to stay.

After months of speculation that Speaker Christine Quinn would seek to change the term limit law, she said in a statement Monday that she had decided not to do so.

Said Quinn: ``I believe that overruling the will of New Yorkers - who have voted twice in favor of term limits - would be anti-democratic and anti-reform.''

Term limits will leave more than half of the 51-seat council out of office in 2009. Many members had been pushing for Quinn to help keep their jobs; she'd left the door open on the issue since she became speaker early this year.
