Lt. Gen. Sanchez to be named Border Texan of the Year
Source: The Monitor

McALLEN - Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, a favorite son of the Rio Grande Valley and a controversial wartime leader, will be honored as the Border Texan of the Year at BorderFest 2008.

Hidalgo mayor John David Franz will announce the choice alongside the Rio Grande City native and three-star general at a press conference Tuesday morning.

Sanchez, 54, served as the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004. During that time he was celebrated as the highest-ranking Hispanic in the Army and derided for his leadership during the scandal over abuse at the Abu Graib prison in Iraq. He retired in 2006.

Past recipients of the award have included then-Governor George W. Bush, U.S. Sen. Lloyd Doggett, McAllen economic development guru Mike Allen and South Texas College president Shirley Reed.

BorderFest's theme this year will be "Celebrating China."
