Email missing from Cheney's office on day White House told to preserve documents in CIA leak
Source: The Raw Story

Among the sixteen days for which email are missing from Vice President Cheney's office is Sept. 30, 2003, the same day the day the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced they were investigating who outed former CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson.

That morning, then-White House counsel Alberto Gonzales ordered the president and the vice president's staff to "preserve all materials that might be relevant" to an inchoate Justice Department probe.

"We were informed last evening by the Department of Justice that it has opened an investigation into possible unauthorized disclosures concerning the identity of an undercover CIA employee," Gonzales wrote in a terse Sep. 30, 2003 email. "The Department advised us that it will be sending a letter today instructing us to preserve all materials that might be relevant to its investigation. Its letter will provide more specific instructions on the materials in which it is interested, and we will communicate those instructions directly to you. In the meantime, you must preserve all materials that might in any way be related to the Department's investigation."

The analysis was released over the weekend by Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW), a D.C.-based ethics watchdog.

4. Friggin' criminal
They just pretty much know they are above and beyond the law. They play "catch us if you can" constantly. They also feel very safe knowing the courts are stacked with conservatives that will pretty much back up anything they argue without question.

Just more of the fallout and consequences of the right wing coup of 2000.

45. It's called "diplomacy" and it pretty much guarantees that no one will
be so "impolite" as to dare "insult" such a high-ranking official by investigating or even insinuating blame. The US has finally evolved from being a fledgling democratic state into a perverse diplomatic state. Even if the courts and the press agreed that this was a criminal act, Congress and all our investigative bodies would just give it a pass. It's our goddamn reputation as a world leader nation at stake!

10. too distracted with infighting/candidate wars? Seriously,
if I recall the story from way back - there was a suspicious time lag between the time the WH should have received the order and the time they were given the order, leading to speculation at the time that there was an illegal heads up to the WH. This would sure confirm that point.

19. Andy Card
had a part in that, if I'm remembering it correctly.

Another thought.....it's possible there is a non-investigation investigation going on. Adding up everything that's been requested and everything that hasn't been produced. Include in this the testimony from the hearings held and the unanswered subpoenas, allegations of War Crimes etc. All of this together could be going somewhere.
We can hope.

he notes that a person from the White House was smug in telling a reporter that, "We've brought in the earthmovers" to cover up on this one. That was in early December of 2003. The un-named WH source was, of course, Karl Rove.

Have you not seen the countless anti-Nazi cartoons his studio produced during the Second World War? Walt put out products that were actively denouncing Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito. Go see "The Führer's Face" or "The spirit of '43" or any of the other anti-facist cartoons Walt put out.

44. Reality
Nothing will be done. Nancy Pelosi has made that abundantly clear. She believes that by allowing this to go unaddressed it somehow serves the agenda of the Democratic Party. But that agenda is not the people's agenda. Not when it further erodes the rule of law which is the foundation of our Constitution and the foundation by which our protections and rights under the Constitution are based. This administration should be held accountable under the law. Begining with impeachment proceedings. Who cares if the Senate blocks it? At least something will have been done. Instead, nothing will be done.

And what if her "plan" doesn't work? What if we again have a Republican president who merely tosses the Constitution entirely? What if her "plan" instead energizes the Republicans who may like the idea of a country where they are above the law and turn out in mass numbers to ensure they are.

Does she think a Justice Department under another Republican president will ever investigate a Republican again?

Does she think a Justice Department under another Republican president will defend our protections and rights under the law?

Does she think that once they regain power that the Republicans will "play nice?"

Why, again, is impeachment off the table, Madame Speaker? Who do you represent" The American people or this president?

there are so many backups of everything... you would have to lose the backups.
There is also a master file in outlook that keeps a copy of everything. A good computer forensic specialist could also find the emails deleted because they arent ever truly erased.

Waxman needs a good email trace and then he can join Wexler in the impeachment hearings.
