For Huckabee, it's off to the Cayman Islands this weekend
Source: USA Today

While GOP front-runner John McCain is talking to the party faithful Friday night at the Wisconsin Reagan Day Dinner in Milwaukee, the guy who's running a distant second to him in the race for delegates will be in the Cayman Islands.

Mike Huckabee will be in that warmer clime until Sunday. He's due to speak at the Young Caymanian Leadership Awards banquet -- a paid gig -- on Saturday.

Fox News' Embed Producers blog reports that Huckabee campaign chief Chip Saltsman had this to say about his candidate's weekend plans:

"We're not giving up. He hasn't had two days off in a row in over a year. ... We are coming right back on the trail on Sunday night. ... This is the man's job, his livelihood. These speeches and books that he sells ... are how he makes his living. Everyone else running has the taxpayers paying their salary, he doesn't. If he does not do this, from time to time, he can’t pay his mortgage."

Cashing in while he is at the peak of his earning capability. Remember this is a guy who registered (at Target) when he and his wife retook their vows and made it clear that cash gift cards were not only acceptable but preferred.

Oriental Kish, in turn, subcontracted parts of the project to Halliburton Products and Services registered in the Cayman Islands.

Halliburton has not tried to make a secret of their office in the Caymans -- their spokesman always reacts with mild surprise that anyone would consider this worth mentioning. I believe the head international office is now being built in Dubai or Qatar or someplace like that -- no doubt the skids all greased by Cheney's daughter, who's in the bidness. (not the new mother, the other daughter).

11. "60 Minutes" (Leslie Stahl) went to the Caymans in late 2002 ...
... to 'check out' the Halliburton office there. There wasn't one.

She interviewed the manager of the Cayman bank that Halliburton uses (using a hidden camera during the interview) and found out that Halliburton's "offices" are a post office box; the mail that is sent there was automatically re-routed to Halliburton's Texas office.

Halliburton had incorporated a Cayman "subsidiary", and used it as a means of doing business with Iraq - thereby skirting the legal prohibition on US corporations doing business with Saddam's government.

The segment aired on the January 25, 2003, episode of "60 Minutes".

22. Halliburton has a Cayman Island subsidiary to do business with.... Iran
Halliburton denied it had violated a U.S. law banning "direct or indirect exportation of U.S.-origin goods, services, or technology to Iran or the Government of Iran."

Halliburton spokeswoman Wendy Hall said the company had not broken the law because all of the work in the South Pars gas field would be done by non-Americans employed by a subsidiary registered in the Cayman Islands.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58298-2005Feb2.html

"If these companies are going through the back door to invest in terrorist nations, Congress must take action to immediately close, lock and seal those doors," Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee said in February 2004.1

As investigators from 60 Minutes discovered, Halliburton has used an offshore subsidiary incorporated in the Cayman Islands (where the company has no oil and gas construction or engineering operations) to trade with Iran, a country that the Bush administration has described as part of an "axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world."2

Federal law disallows American companies from transacting business with nations that sponsor terrorism, but foreign subsidiaries of such companies are not banned from such transactions. In May 2004, the U.S. Senate voted against legislation that would have stopped companies like Halliburton from using offshore subsidiaries to invest in Iran. The legislation was defeated in a 50-49 vote, mostly along party lines.

19. Off to withdraw some money from the old Iran-Contra account maybe?
Or maybe Halliburton's offshore tax shelter?

Or did Pat Robertson give him the account number so he could give himself a couple million dollars?

23. The Caymans are rife with homophobia
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 01:17 PM by KamaAina
a perfect fit for theocrat Schmuckabee.

http://www.planetout.com/news/article.html?1998/01/08/3

The Cayman Islands' refusal to allow an upcoming gay cruise to dock for seven hours, as reported yesterday in NewsPlanet, was not the first instance of homophobia experienced by travellers there. The story has found extensive mainstream coverage, and although the Caymans government has released only a brief statement to journalists, some further information has been reported which may shed some light on the "prior experience" cited by Caymans Minister of Tourism, Commerce & Transport Thomas Jefferson (!!) in determining that, "we cannot count on this group to uphold the standards of appropriate behavior expected of visitors to the Cayman Islands."...

An executive of a Dallas, Texas-based public relations firm representing the Caymans told the "Los Angeles Times" that the islands are "an ultraconservative, deeply religious country" and that there have been problems -- which she would not detail -- with gay tourists in the past. An unnamed Caymans Department of Tourism spokesperson told Reuters that when a gay cruise stopped at Grand Cayman Island a decade ago, the residents were so shocked to see male pairs holding hands and kissing that church groups determined to never admit a similar group again....

An unnamed hotel owner in George Town told Reuters that, "Anyone who says that the Cayman Islands does not welcome gay people is absolutely correct. Let them go to other places." The place the Atlantis Events cruise on a Norwegian Line ship will go instead is Belize, which issued a statement of welcome to the cruise.

Huckabee for President! (of the Caymans, that is :P )

edit: quote; spelling
