Molson Coors plans to cut up to 390 jobs
Source: CNN

March 13, 2008: 12:54 PM EST
Mar. 13, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) --

DENVER (AP) - Molson Coors (NYSE:TAP) Brewing Co., one of the nation's biggest beer makers, said Thursday it plans to eliminate up to 390 jobs, or about 4 percent of its global work force, as part of a cost-cutting drive and outsource the duties to the technology company Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ)

The cuts will be divided about evenly among the company's three operating divisions: Coors Brewing Co. in Golden, Colo., Coors Brewers Ltd. in England and Molson Inc. in Toronto, the company said
The cuts will be in human resources, information technology and finance. The company employs about 9.500 people worldwide. Its brands include Coors Light, Molson Canadian, Keystone and Blue Moon.

Molson Coors spokeswoman Kabira Hatland said the cuts are part of an effort to save $250 million over three years. She said some of the savings would come from efficiency and consistency improvements and the rest from job cuts.

About 40 Molson Coors workers are expected to transfer to Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP and up to 350 others will be laid off.

Molson Coors said functions to be taken over by HP will be done in Canada, Costa Rica, India, Puerto Rico and Poland.

1. In a recession, beer consumption goes down
While hard liquor consumption goes up. At least according to NPR.

Is Coors the canary in the coal mine?

2. The hops crop failed too. Prices will go up. Hard liquor gives you more
bang for the buck. A $10 bottle of WL Weller will make you grin for a lot longer than a six pack of beer. You can go cheaper to Kesslers and get a decent buzz and a taste that is not too much of an assault on your senses. I'm drinking Old Overholt, an American Rye. You can find it for $11 a fifth. I drink a shot a night, that's a lot better than cracking a beer and only drinking half.

12. Na WINE is the way to go
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 05:39 AM by saigon68

At $1.79 this wine is the BOSS

Cisco
18% alc. by vol.

Cisco is bottled by the nation's second largest wine company, Canandaigua Wine Co., in Canandaigua, NY and Naples, NY - the same company as Wild Irish Rose.

Known as "liquid crack," for its reputation for wreaking more mental havoc than the cheapest tequila. Something in this syrupy hooch seems to have a synapse-blasting effect not unlike low-grade cocaine. The label insists that the ingredients are merely "citrus wine & grape wine with artificial flavor & artificial color," but anyone who has tried it knows better. Tales of Cisco-induced semi-psychotic fits are common. Often, people on a Cisco binge end up curled into a fetal ball, shuddering and muttering paranoid rants. Nudity and violence may well be involved too. Everyone who drinks this feels great at first, and claims, "It's not bad at all, I like it." But, you really do not want to mess around with this one, because they all sing a different tune a few minutes later. And by tune, I mean the psychotic ramblings of a raging naked bum.

In 1991, Cisco's tendency to cause a temporary form of inebriated insanity led the Federal Trade Commission to require its bottlers to print a warning on the label . The FTC also forced them to drop their marketing slogan, "Takes You by Surprise," even though it was entirely accurate. Read the FTC's full investigation on their own web page at this link. Since those days, Cisco is harder to find outside the slums, although the FTC's demonizing of the drink only bolstered its reputation for getting people trashed. Anyone who overlooks the warning and confuses this with a casual wine cooler is going to get more than they bargained for. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/predawn/F93/cisco.txt

18. So is piss.
Of course I knocked down some Thunderbird and Boones Farm when I was young, dumb, and broke. None of it compared to the dollar a gallon common black beer. You couldn't see light through it, the anemic head was a puss yellow, it was so bad it made Guinness taste passable. But at a dollar a gallon, it was the drink of choice for sixteen year old boys.

26. I've long loved Bocks, but now my tastes are more Belgian Wheat beers and
IPA's. An occasional Pilsner wouldn't be turned down.

You can get Hoegaarden at Krogers!

Love this label

5. American beers don't use real hops, only the extract of oil for flavor
...Hops was a preservative, but with refrigeration over the last seventy five years only hops flavoring has been incorporated in most American beers and much of that flavoring is artificial.

16. So does most small breweries like Great Lakes and Bells.
Hemp is a good substitute. It makes a smooth light beer.

Both Wheated and very smooth.

there are many many good people who depend on Coors companies for their lively hood.

10. They're gearing up for the merger with Miller Brewing
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:04 AM by Fighting Irish
This is only the tip of the iceberg before they become MillerCoors later this year.

Or, perhaps they realized that it doesn't take that many people to bottle the beer-flavored carbonated water that rolls out of Coors plants.

13. Are they going to lay off Peter Coors?
He and his family are responsible for funding some of the biggest Repug think tanks. He was beaten by Ken Salazar in a Senate race. I never really cared for Coors but I am not known for turning down a beer if offered. However, after learning about their political agenda, I refuse to drink any of their products. I'm sorry for the jobs lost by those folks but I hope this puts a financial crimp on the Coors family.
