Dayton Business Journal U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, demonstrated his support for union movements at a rally Tuesday hosted by the Dayton Newspaper Guild. Brown spoke to about 100 people at the Dayton Area Board of Realtors office about the benefits of the Employee Fair Choice Act, the unfairness of the National Labor Relations Board and gave his support to the guild in its fight for a contract at the Dayton Daily News.
"Your fight is yours and everyone else's across the state and country," Brown said. "We will stand behind you as you fight for this."
The guild, which represents workers at the newspaper, said it has been operating under a contract signed in 1986 and minimum base pay has not increased for 14 years.
Current contract negotiations have been ongoing for a year and the guild said that unresolved issues include what it calls the company's desire to freeze wages in a time of strong profit, denying part-time workers affordable health care and fair arbitration.
