Musharraf says nuclear 'leak' likely
Scary!

snip

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has admitted the country's nuclear scientists may have sold nuclear secrets abroad.

Promising tough actions against the "erring scientists," Musharraf on Friday said investigations into the suspected proliferation would be completed within weeks.

"Well, I would not like to predict, but it appears that some individuals, as I said, were involved for personal financial gain," the Pakistani president said in a television interview on the sidelines of World Economic Forum meet at Davos

1. If a U.S. city is nuked ....
The presence in Pakistan of Taliban and Al Qaeda make me suspect they have ample opportunity to obtain nuclear materials and know-how.

Others in my circles of discussion bet our biggest threat is from nulear-capable countries of the former Soviet Union.

I worry more about Pakistan.

Imagine what this country will be like if even a "small" nuke gets one of our major cities. A low-tech nuke like Hiroshima's or Nagasaki's.

My scenario is the terrorists will warn U.S. authorities before the blast. Their demands will be unmet. The terrorists will notify the media. Some people will evacuate. Others will not. The nuke goes off.

Then the terrorists say "surrender. meet our demands or we will blow up another city."

I shudder to think of the game-theory paths at this point. I suspect the "best" realistic tactic is to quickly dissolve the constitution and claim "There is no United States" so the terrorists are forced to deal with military authorities who control the different regions of the U.S.

internment camps. retaliation. government siezure of media and property. racially based unrest in the U.S. (anti-arab, at first) which spreads overseas. and so on. nowhere to run.

2. one more thing. Iraq was a mistake.
We have wasted 2 years ramping up for Iraq. Big mistake not cleaning up the chaos that is Pakistan and Afghanistan.

3. It was only a matter of time
call it defeatist or cynical, but lord knows it was going to happen.

If not here, some of the former soviet scientists/nukes since Bush the stupid decided to scrap the program which pays russian scientists and disposes of the weapons
