Ten states ask California to put same-sex marriage ruling on hold
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

The dispute over whether the California Supreme Court should put its ruling legalizing same-sex marriages on hold until voters consider the issue in November was joined today by attorneys general from 10 states, who say a postponement might save them from legal headaches over whether to recognize California marriages.

In papers filed with the court, the attorneys general - all Republicans - said that if the ruling is implemented as scheduled June 17, it would subject their states to a profusion of lawsuits involving gay and lesbian residents traveling to California to get married.

... "An inevitable result of such 'marriage tourism' will be a steep increase in litigation" over whether the couple's home state must recognize their marriage, said Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, author of the brief.

... He was joined by the attorneys general of Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina and South Dakota.

California need not recognize or honor such requests; lets hope they have the courage to go forward.

27. yeah no surprise there
we are supposed to be tolerant when it's about collecting women and children as toys (polygamy) but when it's a marriage of two equals...oh the horror the horror!

the utah a.g.'s time would be better spent hanging his head in shame but this type of person knows no shame

...that there are LOTS of right-wingers here and a referendum on a new and improved "marriage protection bill" is pretty much guaranteed. If it fails, it will just come back, over and over and over, I suspect. I'm proud of the court, too, but I don't have much faith that the nutter faction is going to accept their decision.

13. ok.... so now I know that two men may legally be married in California...
.. but what if one of them is white and another one is black? That's still against the law, right? Things will be fine if all the gays get married, but once we start allowing interracial marriage, it's all down hill, yessiree.

and anti-sodomy laws (and other laws restricting consensual sexual behavior) in the 70's. Maybe the rest of the country (minus Mass  ) can catch up a bit faster this time, instead of taking a few decades?

Here's hoping the turning tide will wash away that hateful stain soon.

Yay for you, California--- and don't let the "inconvenience" of bigots trouble you one bit!

20. That Full Faith & Credit Clause in the Constitution is a real bitch, ain't it???

We have to recognize marriages performed in other states as legal. Aggghh!!!

That's why Mildred Loving of Loving v. Virginia was arrested, I believe. The couple got married and then moved from D.C. to Virginia, violating the Virginia law against interracial marriages.
