More Friday Layoffs: 'Newsday' Cuts 32 to 'Reduce Management Layers'

NEW YORK Newsday on Friday reported it had laid off 32 employees -- half in operations management and half from Star Community Publishing.

The cuts, which come as its purchase from Tribune Co. by Cablevision Systems Corp. awaits completion, follow a 120-person staff cut in March. In a statement to employees Friday afternoon, publisher Timothy Knight said the move would "reduce management layers in operations, clarify roles and responsibilities, and speed decision-making."

The employees downsized were managers in the pressroom and involved in other back-office functions.
