Upside of flooding: Great catfishing (actual MSNBC headline)
Source: MSNBC

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. - Treasure lies in the dark river, clothed in iridescent greens and yellows, slipping smoothly down the main channel, bumping up into the flooded bottomlands, gliding, prowling, lurking.

In a crazy commotion of slapping water, it comes squirming and flopping into the bottom of Jim Dockery’s aluminum jon boat.

“That’s a big boy!” Dockery yells, his glee shining through his bushy gray beard.

High water a boon for catfish
Bad for people, the flooding is excellent for the omnivorous catfish, giving them newly inundated areas in the willows and cottonwoods to prowl for minnows, crawdads, crickets and even — for the bigger ones — snakes, turtles and muskrats.

1. On the positive side, at least they aren't eating human bodies.
Had a hard time eating shrimp after the tsunami and Katrina.

Is there a pict of mrbush fishing there?

14. Well one thing is absolutely certain
The waters are filled with toxins. There can be no doubt of that. Every single flood of any consequence distributes toxins throughout the countryside. If these fish are living in these waters there can be no doubt they are consuming polluted elements..Eat these fish at great risk if you must..

22. Huh? That's like saying they are 4 times heavier than they are...
Or are you claiming that removing mercury from the environment would cause them to weigh 25% of what they do now?

Agree with you on letting natural selection take its course on the republics, but your subject line makes no sense.

Makes me sick at how some of the posters think this is a good opportunity to make fun of people.

17. Why would you be curious about that?
I grew up very poor and very country on the Mississippi coast, so yeah, I've fished, crabbed, floundered, shrimped (sort of), netted, and gigged, though it's been decades, and I never liked it much. And never in flood waters in Iowa.

19. Only picking on FEMA, not fishing. Though as a vegetarian
it's not on my usual circle of activities! I'm more likely to stand on the bank and yell "Swim, fishies!"

25. I can't even imagine...
the amount of toxins in those fish. And a lot of them will be eaten by poor people. I fish quite a bit and there are only a couple of lakes around here that I'll catch catfish from - and then only smaller ones. It breaks my heart to see poor people fishing the Tennessee River right below a stream that until recently had "No Bodily Contact" signs on it's banks. :(
