But no one can say what the numbers will mean in the November election

More than 200,000 new voters have registered in Virginia since January, nearly 64 percent under the age of 35.

In a SurveyUSA poll released yesterday, Obama led Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee, 60 percent to 37 percent among Virginia voters ages 18 to 34. Overall, McCain led Obama 48 percent to 47 percent.

Turnout was particularly strong among young voters in Virginia's Feb. 12 Democratic primary. A total of 134,968 voters ages 17 to 29 cast ballots in the Democratic primary, compared with 52,714 in the Republican primary, according to the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement.

The GOP targets "young professionals" up to 41 years old, keeping in mind that the youngest voters might not turn out in large numbers, said Cristen Vehorn, chairwoman of the Greater Richmond Young Republicans.

1. If only more of these folks had voted in 2000 and 2008, we wouldn't be in this mess. nt

When I was in Arlington in '04 the line to vote went around the block and stayed that way all day long. Poll workers told me it was by far the busiest election they'd ever seen, even with more voting machines. But when the vote tallies came out my district, Rosslyn, counted fewer than 200 more votes than they did in 2000.

Regrettably, the tightness of the race here probably makes it close enough to steal, and you know who's gonna steal it if it is.

Edit: But it's no use being gloomy about it, and there is plenty of reason to suspect that it's not as close as it looks. Congressional Quarterly reports that Obama leads among Virginia voters under 34 by 23 percent, and that he's currently only garnering 77% of black voters. That figure can be expected to climb to 90% by election day, as McCain is gonna have to play the race card here any day now.

2. A bit off topic, Underpants
but do you think some of Obama's coattails could help in the Congressional races?

A friend of mine, Andrea Miller, is running for Congress in the 4th District. I sure hope things look good for her.

3. Hard to say
I do know that Forbes is a big money favorite of the GOP-Cheney has been in Richmond at elast twice to fund raise for him. Looking at the Va 4th (from what I know) she could do very very well-frankly I don't see where Forbes gets the votes from other than Powhatan and the areas north of Petersburg.

In my humble opinion I think that the DC insiders have no idea what is coming their way in November. Broder and Cokie and the rest are going to run out of words quick when the results coming pooring in--people are just sick of DC and their ways and "throw the bums out" is the subtitle that no one wants to discuss.

4. Given that the two candidates are running neck-and-neck in VA

it does show a change in the political landscape, especially since VA used to be solidly Republican.
