'Gitmo On The Platte' Set As Holding Cell For DNC
Source: CBS 4 Denver

DENVER (CBS4) ― CBS4 News has learned if mass arrests happen at the Democratic Convention, those taken into custody will be jailed in a warehouse owned by the City of Denver. Investigator Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside for a look.

The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver. Protesters have already given this place a name: "Gitmo on the Platte."

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

"This is a secured environment," Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff's Department told CBS4. "We're concerned about how that's going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive."

2. Once I tried to buy some barbed wire,
specifically to put around a bird's nest outside in our patio area, to protect the babies from the neighborhood cats. I was told in no uncertain terms that it was against code for the fence company to sell me barbed wire.

Yet, even the freeways running through our neighborhoods have barbed wire to protect signs from graffiti. Guess the jails have no problem getting it. Government? Not a problem.

But homeowners, oh, no sir-ee.

3. Where do you live?
I don't think I've ever lived anywhere you can't buy barbed wire.

5. Why do they think they might need this? Is somebody planning on stealing
the nomination from Obama? Or maybe they think they will need it for the hordes of white male Rush fans in pickups with guns who will have their sights set on Obama??

11. I'd think they'd have a much greater chance of mass arrests
and mobs of protestors at the Republican convention........

Seriously, is the KKKlan gonna show up and picket in Denver? Or Westover Baptist?

and the Republicans have never been the same.

Don't ask me why. They are big scaredy cats.

And they run the Denver Police establishment.

22. With good reason
38,000 American dead, 200,000 wounded, your guess on Vietnamese deaths/wounded, all at the hands of Lyndon Johnson and a Democratically controlled Congress. What I don't understand is what in hell are they protesting for at the Democratic convention this year. They should be at the Republican convention. They are the ones that started this war.

9. If Denver has spent anytime reading any of the PUMA blogs
They probably are preparing for throngs of angry people. They will be disapointed when only a few show up for their appointment in Camp PUMA.

10. And what are the Republicans planning?
From the looks of things, not even party stalwarts want to go to the Republican convention. I'm almost willing to bet that protestors will outnumber delegates at this point. Maybe we should all join the GOP, take it over, dissolve it, and take their campaign donations for our own personal use?

No, I'm pretty sure that would be wrong on some level.

"... wrong on some level ..." -------- I assure you that that "level" would be miles above the scum-pool that Repubs and their corporatist, neconster, media whore buddies float.

Peace,

15. On What Level Would That Be Wrong?
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 04:10 PM by Demeter
The GOP is now a proven criminal enterprise, much like a mob family. Taking it over and shutting it down would be legal, useful, honorable, and serving the nation, IMO.

Just don't join it, though. That would be wrong.

18. LOL that would be funny but then again
they might just turn around and join the democratic party and corrupt it as much as they are so I think we might wanna leave them alone, atleast then we know where they are in a way and who they are.

This is not like gitmo, not unless they plan on water boarding them, force feeding, holding them for years without filing charges in a court, access to a lawyer and or without a trial.
When they do those things then you can claim gitmo until then lets inject needless drama please, hopefully the aclu will be satisfied with the arrangments as well because all this appears to be is a temporary area during the convention for people the police arrest for breaking the law, thats all end of story.

25. Have you not learned anything over the last few years?
It has become Standard Operating Procedure for
the police to arrest demonstrators on bogus
charges, hold them for the legal 48 hours or
so, and then, when the event that the protesters
came to protest is long over, the police dismiss
the charges and release the protesters.

Mission accomplished: protest prevented.

*THAT* is why mass arrest facilities like this
need to be headed-off ahead of time, and not
when they're already full of peaceful people
arrested on trumped-up charges.

rights are violated and they can prove it the police can end up paying for it.
Take for example that couple that was wrongly arrested a few years ago at that rally for wearing anti bush tshirts, they sued the police and won I believe.

19. Barbed wire, stun-gun use mark DNC warehouse jail
Source: The Colorado Independent

08/13/2008
Denver officials weren't planning to reveal details about where activists would be detained in the event of mass arrests during the Democratic National Convention until after the event had started, but those plans were quickly dashed this week when CBS 4News reporter Rick Sallinger not only revealed that protesters would be locked up in a city-owned warehouse, but he also obtained clear video footage inside the facility, a building that includes barbed wire-topped cages and signs warning of stun-gun use.

The convention jail is located in a warehouse northeast of Denver, and when Sallinger arrived unannounced with a camera crew to shoot the facility, the door was wide open, allowing the disturbing images of caged holding pens to be broadcast on TVs across the metro area:

Investigative reporter Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside Tuesday for a look. The newly created lockup, in a warehouse northeast of Denver, contains dozens of metal cages made of chain-link fence material, topped by rolls of barbed wire.

Each of these fenced-in areas is about 15 feet by 15 feet, with a lock on the door.

A sign on the wall reads "Warning, electric stun devices used in this facility."

A representative with the Sheriff's Department later showed up to kick Sallinger and his posse out of the warehouse area and wouldn't comment on the building or the cages.

I wonder what is considered as being worthy of arrest? Holding up a sign denouncing McSame? Holding up a sign denouncing the war?
