Obama aide: Palin, Romney crossed line
Source: USA Today

John McCain's presidential campaign let speakers indirectly attack Michele Obama last night during the Republican National Convention, a top aide to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama alleged this afternoon.

In response, a McCain campaign spokesman said it's a "sad day" when one side would make such a charge about what the Republican contender's campaign believes were "expressions of national pride."

USA TODAY's Susan Page reports that at a Christian Science Monitor-sponsored luncheon with reporters in St. Paul, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said he thinks "there is one candidate who is serious about leaving families alone and one that is less so."

After the lunch, Gibbs told Susan that some of the things that were said crossed the line and reflected a "double standard" about what is off-limits.

At issue are comments made during last night's speeches at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

2. First of all, if a spouse campaigns for a candidate he or she is not off-limits.
Second of all, I believe crass and childlike attacks on Michelle help OUR side, not theirs. We don't need top-level whining to cancel out what good could come of it.

This is big-league politics. I'd rather see our side shut up and let the Repugs show their true colors than see our side whine and run for a box of Kleenex every time a Republican acts like a Republican.

Like it or not, Michelle is a fair target for any fair point that comes along. The GOP's inability to make one but insistence on attacking her anyway is GOOD news for us, NOT bad. Obama's "top aide" should stop acting like a wuss and STFU instead of this "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, indirect attacks! No faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaair! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" bullshit.

3. I'm probably just more dense than a lot of people
but I didn't even catch that those comments were attacks until I read the linked article just now.

4. Michelle can handle it. I am sure she has had worse things said about her in her life.
It is a good thing John McCain didn't ask her to run for VP. They would have had a credible candidate in her.
