McCain camp angry over Obama's 'lipstick' comment
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 07:58 PM by DogPoundPup
Source: Ledger-Enquirer

LEBANON, Va. --
What's the difference between the presidential campaign before and after the national political conventions? Lipstick.

The colorful cosmetic has become a political buzzword, thanks to Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's joke in her acceptance speech that lipstick is the only thing that separates a hockey mom like her from a pit bull.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience Tuesday that GOP presidential nominee John McCain says he'll change Washington, but he's just like President Bush.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin's joke. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."

McCain's campaign immediately organized a telephone conference call in response and called on Obama to apologize for calling Palin a pig. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin; he had been talking about McCain immediately before the lipstick comment.

Obama followed up by saying Palin is an interesting story, drawing boos at the mention of her name that he tried to cut off.

OBAMA'S ENTIRE 'COMMENT' "We've been talking about change when we were up in the polls and when we were down in the polls," Obama told a rally here as surveys suggested John McCain and Sarah Palin have overhauled his lead for the November 4 election.

"The other side, suddenly, they're saying 'we're for change too.' Now think about it, these are the same folks that have been in charge for the last eight years," the Illinois senator said to a crowd of 2,400 people.

"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap up an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink after eight years. We've had enough," he exclaimed to a standing ovation.

"Boy, we've really screwed things up, but it could get worse. That's their argument. What John McCain's offering is the same old tired slogans that (President) George Bush offered."

55. Here in TX (home to both of those fine pols you mentioned), many of us use it A LOT.
My husband says it frequently when he is trying to close a deal.

As in - "Now, let's go put some lipstick on this pig & put it to bed!"

It always makes me smile.

As does, "run it up the flagpole & see who salutes" - I said that just yesterday.

However, I don't refer to myself as any kind of animal or fish (i.e., pitbull or barracuda) - that's just dumb.

Sarah Palin: All hat, no cattle. Uh, I'm not so sure about the hat, either.

25. Too funny..
McCain's campaign called the comments "offensive and disgraceful" and said Obama owes Palin an apology. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin and said the GOP camp was engaging in a "pathetic attempt to play the gender card." Obama's camp also noted that McCain once used the same phrase to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.

28. Good for Obama
I just wish he and Biden would stop feeling the need to praise Palin and McCain at every turn right after they attack them. You don't HAVE to say anything nice about them....they'll do that about themselves, and they will NEVER say anything nice about you. Attack, attack, attack...never stop and never, ever apologize. Always accuse them of whining and weakness when they complain. Remind people that Russia and Iran and China won't treat them nicely if they were in office, and if they whine and whimper at a little rough campaigning, they're not fit to lead.

31. who own "lipstick?"
Although Obama was referring to the GOP the public, and to some degree rightly so, will remember Palin's use of lipstick and associate it with her. The right wing supporter are going all out to turn this into a negative-- just read the you-tube posts for example. Let us be honest many white folks are looking for the smallest of excuses to not vote for a black man, and this will do nicely. No apologies are needed, but maybe the new image should be a can of worms stinks no matter how packaged.

as is whoever is whining about the comment. It is a very common expression, and everyone knows it. Whoever is showing fake outrage is doing just that. They need to rag on Obama, and they'll find any hidden meaning, even when one doesn't exist. It's nonsense, and the only people that complain are the ones that weren't going to vote for him anyway.

He used this same expression in much the same way BEFORE Caribou Barbie was added to the ticket. McCain also used this exact expression when referencing Hilliary's health care proposal. Where was the outrage then? After all, Hillary was the only candidate wearing lipstick? To justify their faux outrage by calling this an error is ridiculous. It's more of the same lie and distort politics that we always see from these ass wipes.

66. The phrase "Lipstick on a pig" enjoys a well know history in American politics...
The McCain/Rove guys are jumping on appearances to further gin up a new culture war.

Rovian strategy -- "Tout your weaknesses & attack your adversary's strengths."

Propaganda 101

75. It was not a gaffe, it was brilliant.
He made them look like the whiny think skinned idiots they are. They sure can dish it out but can't take it when it gets tough.

78. It was an inadvertent mistake.
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 09:51 AM by robcon
gaffe Pronunciation gaf
-noun
a social blunder; faux pas.
a socially awkward or tactless act

It was an error to open himself to such criticism. McCain could have gained points, I suppose, by 'responding' something like "I will not 'respond' to that obvious mistake by my opponent." McCain would have gained in stature among the electorate by seeming not to take offense at a possible interpretation of what Obama said (while still reminding people of the possible interpretation.) Sometimes hypocrisy (responding by not responding) pays off. McCain missed that "opportunity" to appear to be above it all.

Instead Obama lost - but only a little, and, I'm sure, only temporarily.

77. Obama was not referring to Palin in any way, shape or form.
How on earth they can twist these things is just beyond me.

Let us for a minute pretend that Obama was referring to Palin. Is calling someone a pig in lipstick worse or better than calling your wife a cunt? Just kind of curious!!!!!

79. Moosebites Palin Led With Her Chin, Her Lips, Whatever...
"Moosebites" Palin led with her chin, --er--her lips, --er--whatever, and Barrack Obama couldn't resist the temptation to land one on her kisser.

Too bad, Sarah.

Sarah, things could have been worse, you know. Much worse. You could have been a Democrat getting dissed by a Republican.

80. What's with the Truth Squad for Sarah Palin?
I don't know if this is official or not. Anyway, a bunch of GOP women are going all hear-me-roar about supposedly tough Sarah. :eyes:
