McCain revisiting Keating 5 banking scandal again
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly two decades later, John McCain is still haunted by his role in the Keating Five scandal.

His role in the 1980s banking scandal is featured in a new Barack Obama attack video. McCain's presidential campaign quickly moved to limit any damage.

The Republican senator's lawyer in the case, John Dowd, told reporters in a conference call Monday that McCain had been the victim of "a political smear job" by Senate Democrats.

When a reporter noted that McCain himself has spoken contritely about his role, Dowd responded, "I'm his lawyer and I have a different view of it."

McCain said his reputation was so tarnished by the Keating case that he compared his ordeal — in some ways — to the torture he suffered as a prisoner of war.

"I faced in Vietnam, at times, very real threats to life and limb," McCain told The Associated Press in a written statement last March. "But while my sense of honor was tested in prison, it was not questioned. During the Keating inquiry, it was, and I regretted that very much."

3. If anyone else compared getting caught in a dodgy coverup of illegality to being a POW
the McCain campaign would rip them to shreds - disrespecting the service of honourable airmen and so on. And they'd have a bit of a point. But he seems to think he has a right to say what the fuck he likes about it, and demean it if he wants. Fuck him.

7. I had a bad feeling about us going there.....Keating 5 and all....
Mccain could care less for the facts which he has proven time and time again. He is masterful at spin/lie and whatever it takes to keep/maintain the veil of deception.

13. He *has* to be slammed on the Keating 5, again and again
It's the most relevant thing from any candidates' past. McCain was up to his neck in a big financial scandal that cost the taxpayers billions, showing his bad judgement and general weaseliness.

18. In a big financial scandal that is particularly relevant at this juncture
What's going on right now has an awful lot to do with the S&L scandal and with the Enron debacle as well, not that anyone brought up Enron but how can one help but..........

22. That is why the Obama video is masterful
It carefully explains what happened, sticking 100% to what was proven and lets people draw their own conclusions.

The fact is that McCain got off easy - as the Senate did not look at what he did while in the House and the House never investigated what he did then. I read some of Cranston's defense in the Senate record. One point he made was that none of them profited personally. In fact, McCain did take personal gifts (vacations)when he was a Congressman and I believe they were not reported when they should have been. He also co-sponsored legislation to slow the date when new regulation that would affect Lincoln Savings would go into affect. That was not part of the Keating 5 case, but it was clearly not proper.

McCain got a hugh pass on this from his adoring media.

4. Had McNuts CHANGED his attitude toward regulating institutions
like the banks/S&Ls, he MAY have been able to claim that he paid a price for his misjudgement and LEARNED his lesson, but he obviously DIDN'T!

8. The MOST TORTURE McSAme have EVER endured,,,
is what he puts himself through in trying to be figure head in life LARGER than either his father or grandfather were. THAT is what is driving McSame, similar to what has driven * over the years, to be 'bigger and better' than his father.

11. Keep Talking About This, AP
ANY mention of Keating is going to be damaging to McCain, particularly the bizarre, overreaction from his lawyer yesterday (which is noted in the AP article).

Basically, the McCain people have ensured that this will be discussed for the rest of the week, and there is no way to make John McCain look good while that's happening.

Looking forward to the "economy" part of the "debate" tonight.

12. No regret at being a Keating 5
just regret at getting caught.
