`Joe the Plumber,' Who Dislikes Obama Tax Plan, Owes Back Taxes
2008-10-16 17:57:13.250 GMT

By Ryan J. Donmoyer
Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- ``Joe the plumber,'' the Toledo,
Ohio, man whose complaints about Barack Obama's tax plan were
featured in the final presidential debate, owes the state of Ohio
almost $1,200 in back income taxes.
According to records on file with the Lucas County Court of
Common Pleas, the state filed a tax lien against Samuel J.
Wurzelbacher for $1,182.98 on Jan. 26, 2007, that is still
active.
Wurzelbacher was thrust into the national spotlight this
week when he told Obama he worried that the Illinois senator's
proposals to roll back Bush administration tax breaks for
Americans earning more than $250,000 would prevent him from
buying a plumbing business that would earn between $250,000 and
$280,000 a year.
Republican John McCain, the Arizona senator, pointed to the
exchange during the debate last night when he turned to the
camera and said, ``I will not stand for a tax increase on small-
business income.'' Directly criticizing Obama, he added, ``what
you want to do to `Joe the plumber' and millions more like him is
have their taxes increased and not be able to realize the
American dream of owning their own business.''
Today, at a rally in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, McCain said
that ``the real winner last night was `Joe the plumber.'''
Wurzelbacher's home telephone number is unlisted, and
efforts to reach him by calling his neighbors and family were
unsuccessful. Attempts to reach Wurzelbacher at the plumbing
company where he works were also unsuccessful. The address on the
lien and other records for him matched the address published by
the Toledo Blade, which also noted the lien.

A Lien

The state of Ohio places a lien on real property after
several steps to try to collect a tax debt, according to John
Kohlstrand, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Taxation who
said he couldn't discuss any specific case.
If a delinquency notice goes unheeded, the Department of
Taxation issues a billing notice, Kohlstrand said. If that is
ignored, a more formal assessment notice is sent. Failing to
appeal an assessment or losing an appeal puts the debt into the
hands of the state attorney general for collection. The attorney
general typically sends a collection notice and simultaneously
files a lien.
``The taxpayers may not necessarily know about the lien,''
Kohlstrand said, although they would receive other notices.
In Wurzelbacher's case, the lien indicated that the notice
was sent to a previous address in Toledo.
Under Obama's proposal, Wurzelbacher would face about $900
more in taxes if he netted $280,000 of income from his new
business, said Gerald Prante, a senior economist at the Tax
Foundation, a Washington research group that is examining both
candidates' plans. ``His average tax burden, the final bill he
pays to the IRS isn't going to go up much if he's just making
$280,000 a year,'' Prante said. He would face higher marginal tax
costs to expand the business beyond that, he said.

4. WP: Joe the Plumber: Not a Licensed Plumber and doesn't make "even close" to $250,000

Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber and he's "not even close" to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama's proposals.

Such is the whirlwind of information that has come out about Joe Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio, since Republican John McCain made him famous in last night's debate. McCain mentioned him more than 20 times to use him as a symbol of hard-working Americans who would be hurt by Obama's tax policies. Obama and Wurzelbacher met earlier in the week in Toledo, where Wurzelbacher said Obama's plans to raise taxes on those making $250,000 a year or more would penalize him in his plans to buy the plumbing business for which he works.

Wurzelbacher since then has been on Fox News, interviewed by CBS's Katie Couric and appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Not all the attention has been welcomed. Wurzelbacher, 34, told the Associated Press that he was not a licensed plumber. Because he works for a small company that does residential work, he said, he doesn't need to be licensed.

Wurzelbacher said he is of modest means, but worried Obama's tax plans would eventually hurt him. "You see my house. I don't have a lot of bells and whistles in here, really. My truck's a couple of years old and I'm going to have it for the next 10 years probably. So I don't see helping me out,'' he told reporters this morning.

He also sounded concerned about the attention he is receiving. "I'm completely flabbergasted with this whole thing and just hope I'm not making too much of a fool of myself and hope I can get my message out there," he said.

5. Boy - I Wish I Had Joe The Plumber's Problem ......
I'd gladly pay $900 more in taxes to make $280,000. I guess Phil Grahm was right - we are a country of whiners.

6. What's this guy's actual first name? Joe? Samuel? Larry?
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 01:19 PM by kineta
This article says it's Samuel. I heard that the only plumber with the last name of Wurzelbacher registered in Ohio (expired 2002, btw) was named Larry.

Why is he 'Joe the Plumber'?

21. Perhaps he didn't like it.
Not everybody uses their first name; some use their middle name. Or a nickname.

My father went by "Mel", from his middle name, because there were a million "Bobs", "Robs", and "Roberts" in his age cohort. He dropped it later for a nickname (his last name, clipped). At work, though, he was "Bob". It confused the hell out of me until I got it figured out.

My uncle went by "Robbie". His first name was something like "Oscar".

It happens. Often people don't know they're using a person's middle name unless there's a reason for it.

We use my kid's middle name for some purposes--primarily when we have to be in a non-English-language setting. Then again, his middle name was chosen precisely to avoid the cross-linguistic problem his first name poses.

18. The scene today in Ohio
"This is Melanie Cooper reporting live from Lucas County for KOHN... as hundreds of lawyers representing the Republican Party swarm en mass into the courthouse armed with lawsuits and stop action motions on behalf of Joe The Plumber. Inside the courtrooms of Lucas County, hearing after hearing is taking place with the lawyers demanding a court order releasing Joe from his tax debt and liens... one lawyer asked for a gag order to be placed on the matter... film at 11."
