Obama is the Choice (Atlanta Journal)

Sunday, October 19, 2008

The 44th president of the United States will take office in an uncertain and dangerous time for this country. The challenges we face both overseas and here at home are complex and unfamiliar, and the road ahead is likely to be very different from the road we have traveled to get here.

Leading the country in such a time will require someone of intellect, creativity, honesty and passion for those traits that have made America great. That person is U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

In the past eight years, the policies and ideologies that have animated the Bush administration have proved disastrous in almost every field of endeavor, from foreign policy to economics to relatively straightforward tasks such as responding to natural disasters. As a consequence, President Bush’s approval rating is as low as or lower than that of any other president in the history of polling.

The contrast with the campaign run by Barack Obama could not be more stark. More than a year ago, when he was still a long shot without much money, Obama somehow managed to attract a staff talented and disciplined enough to defeat Hillary Clinton and the Clinton machine in the Democratic primaries. It has since gone on to demonstrate a great deal of political discipline, skill and innovation, running a 21st century campaign that appeals to 21st century America.

Different challenges require different strengths. Obama has demonstrated a calm, thoughtful leadership style that fits this time and this challenge well. He has laid out a wiser, more measured approach toward foreign policy that elevates diplomacy and negotiation while reserving the use of force if necessary to protect this country and its allies in a dangerous world. He understands that international respect and admiration can’t be forced at gunpoint.

1. Whoo-hoo! One more big city paper on board. Chicago Tribune
and LA Times as well:
"Democrat Barack Obama on Friday won endorsements from two unlikely newspapers — the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

While the Tribune is the largest daily in Obama's hometown, the publication hasn't backed a Democrat in its 161-year history. And the Times hasn't endorsed a presidential candidate since 1972, when it backed President Richard M. Nixon's re-election."

2. Atlanta Journal-Constitution is a very important paper in what may be an extraordinary state.
This one counts, big time.

3. Obama is just cleaning up the newspaper
endorsements. This one is very influential and it's nice to see it happening.

4. I hope it makes a difference
:kick:

It was so depressing, in 2006, to know I was in one of only a few states that went more Repug. I'm hoping for a change.

The AJC may influence Atlanta, but Atlanta is already more liberal than the rural portions of the state.

We'll see...

Here's hoping,

11. You can count on the San Diego Union
This paper will vote for a stick as long as it a republican stick. The paper gets thinner by the months and they wonder about not being able to sell a newspaper. They would rather go bankrupt with John McCain than endorse Senator Obama. God I hate my local newspaper.

8. Worst paper in America in what now is about the reddest state in the South.
Obama will not win here. We are greedy and racist.

Not me, of course. I live in the bluest area.

9. GA went for Clinton in 1992.
GA has been trending right, but that's probably the result of our voting machines. I like to think of Georgia as right-moderate. AL, SC, and MS are much redder. I still hold out hope for GA.

The AJC, on the other hand, has endorsed the Democrat in the last five presidential contests, I think. This endorsement is no surprise.

10. Onehandle, I hope you're joking re: GA
I'm with Obama on not categorising states as 'red' or 'blue.' I live in ATL.

I have talked to people I never thought would vote for Obama. And they are going to. Many are fed up with Republicans. McCain's plan to tax employer-subsidised health insurance benefits is one issue which alienates people. They are frightened by what's happened to their 401Ks. They're also sick of the war.
