McCain Adviser Says Northern Virginia Not "Real" Virginia
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 03:11 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: ABC News

It might be a good idea for the folks from the McCain campaign to take a day off, take a breath, and then return to work. Republicans unaffiliated with the campaign tell me the "bunker" mentality there is really starting to hurt them.

To wit: McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer on MSNBC today.

"As a proud resident of Oakton, Virginia, I can tell you that the Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia and moved into northern Virginia," Pfotenhauer said, speaking of Democratic gains in that part of the state. "And that's really what you see there.

"But the rest of the state, 'real Virginia,' if you will, I think will be very responsive to Senator McCain’s message," she continued.

Pfotenhauer went on to make a totally valid point about Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., having to play defense in Pennsylvania, as areas in battleground states where Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., could do well.

-----

But the "real Virginia" line -- made in the wake of the nominee's brother, Joe McCain, referring to Arlington and Alexandria as "Communist country" -- is what's most likely to make news, and help Team Obama drive up Democratic turnout in the battleground state.

3. They are getting really desperate
at least she didn't say they weren't real Americans or something even though that's exactly what she and the campaign means if they don't vote for McCain.

4. This is their last gambit? The "real" Virginia and the "pro-America" districts?
Such disdain for a diverse country, played out as a political ploy, is truly pathetic. They are no longing playing to the base, they are playing to the basest.

9. Not a clue. My guess would be a leaderless campaign, calling on familiar loose cannons
to somehow "change" the trend. They are flailing. And failing.

10. It confuses me too - these types of comments can't possibly help
them, it only alienates people. Someone in NOVA who may have been leaning McCain would be deeply offended by this remark. These people are either deeply stupid or totally out of control...probably both.

5. If they have a VA
address and are registered to vote then they count as real Virginians. Maybe Puffinuthin would like to have them count 3/5th but those days are long gone. You could try appealing it to the Supreme Court. Though I doubt they'll roll back the clock even for you at this point.

12. PBS
Did anyone watch PBS last night where they were interviewing resident in Virginia? The spoke about the Military support for Obama, they also interviewed to Long time White females republican who are voting for Obama because of the economy (the only reason I mention their race because there are some that think Obama still can't get their vote).

They also had a couple where the husband was still undecided but his wife was very ignorant filled of hate, she is voting for McLame because he's a Christian and Obama is a Muslim/Atheists because his parent were. The husband works at a paper plant but that same company has closed several plant's nation wide and her husband plant could be closing but yet she refuses to vote for Obama am I missing something here? Other than this ignorant woman it was a pretty good segment for Obama.

Sarah palin recently suggested that some places in the U.S. are more "pro-America" than others. Very few understood what she meant.

"We believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in the wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation," she said.

19. NoVA resident here....
Actually, I came in from Maryland....not DC. :)

Actually here in McLean, we have a few McCain/Palin signs around. Probably those in/near the "top 1%" that are going to be taxed a bit more. The Obama signs seem to outnumber them about 2 to 1.

21. read this : Who has campaigned more in the 'real Virginia'?
Who has campaigned more in the 'real Virginia'?
From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby

(CNN) – McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer made a splash Saturday by drawing a line between northern Virginia and “real Virginia,” which she said is the “part of the state that is more Southern in nature,” a comment that may not sit well with the many residents of the commonwealth residing north of Frederickburg.

Using Pfotenhauer’s definition, however, Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have out-campaigned their Republican rivals by a significant margin in “real Virginia.”

Obama has made nine campaign stops in central, southwest and southeast Virginia: in Martinsville, Lynchburg, Chester, Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Lebanon, Norfolk and Newport News. Biden has made two: Castlewood and Fredericksburg.

By contrast, McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin have only ventured out of northern Virginia twice. On Monday, the pair held a joint rally in Virginia Beach, and Palin then continued on to a campaign stop in Richmond.

23. Well, that's obviously because it's part of Maryland.
The trans-Potomac invasion proceeds apace. Soon, our dastardly plan will be complete, and Northern Virginia shall take its rightful place as the vital Southern Provinces of Maryland! *Strikes evil villain pose* Muhahahahaha!

(P.S. I think Delaware will be next. Nothing against them, but let's face it, if you look at a map it looks like it SHOULD belong to MD. And it's slightly more convenient to say "Marva Peninsula" than "Delmarva Peninsula".)

In all seriousness, I'm sort of surprised that the GOPers aren't watching themselves better. I mean, really, they keep shooting themselves in the collective foot, but then fail to notice that it kind of aches when they walk on it...
