Pakistan rejects 'America's war' on extremists

Serious doubts multiplied yesterday (Thursday) about Pakistan's commitment to America's military campaign against al-Qaida and the Taliban after parliament overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for dialogue with extremist groups and an end to military action.

The new strategy, backed by all parties, emerged after a fierce debate in parliament where most parliamentarians said that Pakistan was paying an unacceptable price for fighting "America's war". If implemented by the government, support for Pakistan from international allies would come under severe strain, adding further instability to a country facing a spiral of violence and economic collapse.

"We need to prioritise our own national security interests," said Raza Rabbani, a leading member of the ruling Pakistan People's party. "As far as the US is concerned, the message that has gone with this resolution will definitely ring alarm bells, vis-a-vis their policy of bulldozing Pakistan."

The resolution, passed unanimously in parliament on Wednesday night demanded the abandonment of the use of force against extremists, in favour of negotiation, in what it called "an urgent review of our national security strategy".

Call for urgent review of war on terror: Joint session adopts resolution

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: The joint session of the two houses of parliament on Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution calling for “an urgent review of the national security strategy and revisiting the methodology of combating terrorism in order to restore peace and stability through an independent foreign policy”.

It further said that the military would be replaced as early as possible with civilian law-enforcement agencies with enhanced capacity and a political system achieved through a consultative process.

4. Most excellent and prudent move. Extremists are created by violence,
not eliminated by it.

5. Sheesh... what is their problem
Sure, we have bombed and killed a few of their soldiers and school kids.

But look on the bright side we have bombed 15% fewer wedding parties and we announce killing at least an Al Queda #2 per month.

What more do they want from us.... peace????

:sarcasm:

6. I watched every moment of the 3 month lo Iraq war
I watched the entire 3 months of the Iraq war in a hospital. With tubes coming out of my chest. 3 months I laid there and watched CNNs coverage. The people killed, the babies burned. Our disrespect for human life grows as America uses the Bush Doctrine to maliciously invade countries with drones and special-ops killing hundreds of innocent lives all at times to chase one or two people. It has to end or the respect for America could take 50 years or more to mend with the world.
