Economic woes leave many 'really hesitant' to spend on Thanksgiving travel

CHICAGO - Travelers breezed through airport terminals Wednesday and drivers cruised open roads, the effects of a sour economy blamed for keeping people closer to home at the start of the annual Thanksgiving rush.

Even though gas prices fell and airlines offered last-minute deals, many Americans appeared to be skipping trips this year. San Francisco resident Sharon McKellar called the Miami airport "shockingly quiet" after flying in overnight to visit family.

At Boston's Logan International Airport, Alicia Kelly, 47, traveling with her husband and two children to Miami to spend the holidays with her family, said it was the lightest Thanksgiving travel she's ever seen. "We have waited in no lines so far," she said.

Another sign of the times. The Bush Depression keeps Americans at home even on the previously heaviest traveled holiday of the year.

I'm afraid the Bush Depression is going to get much, much worse long before it gets any better. We are in for a world of hurt.

1. Just checked the flight my lady and I are on tomorrow
and there's not a seat to be had left. Sure hope I don't have some damn screaming seat-kicker behind me like last time...

4. That's because there are far fewer flights scheduled.
I am in Cabo San Lucas, and the plce is almost empty.

I got a $700 room for $80.

3. I know that's what they are saying...
but they should have seen I-35W near Forth Worth today...

by the looks of my view from Denton to Fort Worth this afternoon 35 was a parking lot.
Literally. I'm not exaggerating. I had to turn off on a huge detour. I've never seen holiday traffic like this.

On another part of 35, my DH is driving back from Austin from a road trip for work right this minute.
He says it's been stop and go since Temple.
It has NEVER been like that before.

for the geographically challenged:
Denton is an hour north of DFW and
Temple is to the south between DFW and Austin -- it's normally a 4 hour drive from Austin to Dallas.

Personally, I think people will drive, because the cost of gas has gone down.

That said, I had better get to work now. Might take me longer.

6. But my daughters drove between Jersey and DC today
in 2 1/2 hours, which took them some years ago 9 hours, holiday-time.

5. I am in Cabo San Lucas, and occupancy is MAYBE 20%.
This place is surreal, no one is around. Normally, this town is overflowing with Americans during Thanksgiving week.

I got a $700 room for $80. At the last minute, too. Eight days for less than the price of one.

Down the road, The Sheraton is running Happy Hour (2 for 1) from noon 'til midnight.

8. I have today off, but am working tomarrow
I'm getting double time and a half, so, it's worth it to go in.
In fact, I'm gunning for 40 hours of overtime this week.
Been on 40 hours for so long, I really need the extra cash.

Oh, double time and a half = 53.25 per hour...I am shooting for a 14 hour day ;)
