KBDI refuses to delay airing of Guantanamo torture documentary

By CARA DEGETTE 12/8/08 9:57 AM

Even as Barack Obama has vowed one of the first acts of his presidency will be to shut down Guantánamo, and even as the topic has been raging in Congress, many Americans will have to wait until the day after George W. Bush leaves office to watch a documentary detailing the horrific policies of his regime.

Though PBS stations across the country have shied from airing “Torturing Democracy”, Colorado’s KBDI Channel 12 wants viewers to know it isn’t hesitating to share the provocative documentary with its viewers.

“The documentary is phenomenal; this is just pure journalism,” says Marcia Simmons, director of marketing and communications for Denver-based KBDI Channel 12. Simmons says she’s been floored by reports that other PBS stations haven’t found time to schedule it until the day after Obama is sworn in. The 90-minute documentary, produced and written by Sherry Jones, examines interrogation methods that were used by the CIA before migrating to the United States military at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba and other locations

The national controversy over the airing of “Torturing Democracy” has been written about sporadically in recent months. On Oct. 15, The New York Times detailed the difficulties that Jones has had in getting the documentary broadcast in a timely fashion. Though the documentary has been aired on a “grab bag” of PBS stations across the country, including in New York, the network itself decided on a national air date of Jan. 21, the day after Obama is sworn into office.

Is posted on their website in three parts -- http://torturingdemocracy.org/

I'd say "enjoy", but I think "brace yourself" is more appropriate for this one. Highly recommended.

*on edit: Website also has a list telling when it will be airing on individual PBS stations around the country. Under "The Documentary" section, go to "More" and "Broadcasts".

6. It's a calculated move
To not air it until after BO is made prez. They figure it will make HIM look bad - not shrubco.

Ultimate tacky, but not surprising any more from these a**holes.

7. I disagree, micraphone
BTW...welcome to DU!

I think that they do this out of fear. Sy Hersh says that there are a lot of whistleblowers piling up, but they will not say a word until the day after whistle-ass leaves office. They are genuinely afraid of crossing the impudent little shit and his cronies. I do not know what kind of hold this crappy administration has over them, but the fear is palpable. It also explains why an unpopular lame duck still gets his way with a Congress that not his political party.

These guys are vindictive and do not give a shit. Everyone will be on eggshells until Jan 21st for fear the little turd will pull the plug on the whole country out of spite....that is, if he hasn't already.

9. You make a valid point
And thanks for the welcome, Zodiac!

These guys and their media lapdogs have made sure whistleblowing is, at best, difficult. And you only need to look at various "suicides" to explain their fear.

Maybe after the 21st there will be a flood of whistleblowers coming forward - if so, great. But don't bet on the M$M to report any of it. We've had years of smear and ignore from those guys.

12. The hold is probably blackmail. That's what all the NSA spying was
for all along--to get dirt on everyone to blackmail them into doing CheneyBush's will.

8. KBDI (k "beady eye")
is Denver's second PBS station, KRMA has been around longer. But KBDI has, from time to time, exercized an independence in programming that has been mostly lacking in the staid, predictable KRMA.

13. "the horrific policies of his regime."
Now THAT is what the US "media" should have been saying for years (as the rest of the world's actual real live media has been saying.)

14. ...
"This spring, PBS’s distinguished Frontline series aired a mildly critical account of the lead-up to the Iraq War entitled “Bush’s War.” As the airing of the program was announced, the Bush Administration proposed to slash public funding for PBS by roughly half for 2009, by 56 percent for 2010 and eliminating funding entirely for 2011.

Did PBS get the message? Perhaps."

"In Colorado, Simmons says viewer response ranged from people writing in to thank the station for airing it, to others saying, “How dare you air this after 9-11?”
