College Republicans offer whites-only award

Feb. 15, 2004  |  BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) -- A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $50 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctri nates students into homosexual sex .

Arguing with college republicans is pointless. They think that they have all these clever metaphors for affirmative action like this scholarship and their racist bake sales. Of course, the analogies are utterly flawed; they do not factor in the difficulty that minorities face because of the conservatives and their legacy of racism in America. Yet there is no point in calling attnetion to this. How is this influencing their lives now? No servants to wait on them? No colored people to hang, etc.? Most the whites in the south were dirt poor just like the blacks. They had more freedoms but very little otherwise.

Well, most Southerners didn't own slaves, but they supported it because it gave them someone to look down on. Sure, the poor whites were ignorant, uneducated, and mired in poverty, but at least they weren't owned. I think part of this mentality is reflected in the affirmative action debate today. wtf is it supposed to be and were did I miss mine? this is one issue i guess i don't agree with most here on. i grew up in a lower/middle class home, i got my first job when i was 14 and have worked ever since. i drove a route truck through the worst parts of town at night to pay my way through community college and took student loans for the rest. i am approaching 30 and must have missed it. i don't believe in scholarships or awards for any race but if you are going to have them then shouldn't all be allowed to do so? if not all we are doing is further dividing ourselves.

i firmly believe the only way to fully stop racism is the quit the self imposed segregation that we have in alot of systems nowadays. as long as you have any group receiving benefits another isn't, the other will be jealous and resent that group for it. its human nature. we are a "me" creature. i don't agree with what this group is doing, however i understand its point since honestly there is no "white" race anyways. i have a problem with people celebrating one history but shaming another since everyones history has had some mistakes. i am all for diversity and i believe it is one of this country's greatest strenghts, however until we move pass anyone getting any special anything all we are doing is pissing in the wind saying "yeah but they do too"

I think affirmative action should be broadened to include class as well as race. Lower middle class and working class whites do face an uphill struggle to better their situation. If they are the first in their families to attend college it can be daunting. For many lower middle class whites they have no idea of what to expect at a college or university because there is no one in their family who has had that experience. Many are also seen as thinking themselves better than their relatives should they be successful in attaining a degree (which is not a guarantee considering the drop out rate for college students who come from the lower middle and working class.
