Cessna Announces 2,000 More Layoffs

Thousands of Cessna employees across the nation will be out of a job in a couple months.

The aircraft manufacturer announced Monday it will cut 2,000 positions. Spokesperson Doug Oliver says officials with the company are still deciding which positions to cut. He doesn't know yet when notices will go out, although he says it will not happen today. Under federal law, they will receive two month's notice.

Like last month's round of layoffs, workers will have an opportunity to volunteer to leave. Those employees will receive the same severance package as the people who are forced to leave. Oliver wouldn't tell us what that deal specifically includes, but it is the same as the last package offered.

There are 15,500 people working at Cessna's four assembly plants and nine service centers. Oliver says Wichita's plant will see more reductions in its workforce, but not all offices will likely see changes.

Last month Cessna announced it would lay off 500 workers from its Wichita plant and 165 other employees. With today's announcement, that amounts to 14% of its workforce who will be laid off.
