Vatican attacks US abortion move
Source: BBC

The Vatican has condemned President Obama's move to restore US funding for family planning clinics abroad that give advice on or carry out abortions.

One Vatican official warned against the "arrogance" of those in power who think they can decide between life and death.

Another official said it dealt a blow to groups fighting against "the slaughter of the innocents".

The White House says the move aligns the US with other nations fighting poverty and promoting health care.

Well, we've been attacked again. Should we use the "Bush Doctrine" here?

and we'll both be happier for it.

He also needs to learn the difference between civil law and religious edict. If he doesn't, then let's start taxing his organization.

48. No, but I would hope that my government would be able to differentiate between
the two. This is a good step in that direction. The more steps, the happier I'll be. (P.S. Relatively fundamentalist Christian in favor of TOTAL separation of church and state here.)

45. Ratz., who organized against Kerry in 2004, is lecturing us about: "the slaughter of the innocents"
I missed his long treatment about the immorality of petro-imperialism and torture.

Cardinal Ratzenberger was one of "those" clerics who excommunicated Kerry in 2004 and/or organized against him. If they had kept their stinking mouths shut, Kerry probably would have won Ohio.

There was some douchebag at work dropping "Catholic" anti-abortion/anti-Kerry literature in the breakroom where I work.

49. Bingo! It's about time religion felt the down side of
mixing church and state.

So far, it's been all tax breaks, school vouchers, funding FBI's and appeasing.

When our government starts interfering with what churches can do, preach, etc., maybe the beauty of total separation of church and state will start dawning on churches.

34. Disgusting bastard
If he doesn't realize the harm the global gag rule caused thousands of women, he doesn't deserve the to be the head of any so-called "compassionate" religion. What would Jesus do? I'm not religious-- but my take on it is that the Jesus compassionate Christians believe in would want to protect innocent women from having baby after baby without proper care or education. To allow each life a chance after birth, rather than really not giving a shit that it's been condemned to poverty and disease way before it was ever conceived, much less born.

What a complete and total asshole.

51. The Pope
Is this the same pope who won't get rid of the child molesters?

Is this the same pope who sits on top of untold sums of money but does not end as much suffering with it as he might?

Is this the same church that stood by when the Nazi's were in power?

Is this the same church that denies women equal rights?

Who the hell cares what the pope or the catholic church says.

As a retired catholic and now stone cold atheist I see what the church has done and is continuing to do in places all around the world. Keep the people ignorant, keep the people poor. I know there are some exceptions to this, but these are individual priests, not the official policy of the pope or the church.

Can't wait for the last king to be strangled with the entrails of the last priest.

60. When will the Fucking Media get it straight? This really irks me.
It is NOT an abortion move but contraceptive and STD prevention move. If a group even mentioned abortions (here are your choices, have a baby or have a baby), they were banned from the funding. They could be a group that never ever had anything to do with abortions, but if it was mentioned ("give advice" like "what is your choice, have a baby or get an abortion") no funding.

So, news media. Revoking the Gag rule means that many women not will be able to PLAN when they want to get pregnant, be able to PLAN their working lives out a bit more, will be able to PLAN on less exposure to HIV and other STDs (that one is for women and men). THANK YOU President Obama. If someone were able to prevent pregnancy and STDs, wouldn't that be a good thing?

News media, it is about women being able to have more control over their lives, preventing pregnancies and STDs, much more than getting abortions. Good lord media, get it right.
