...I'll bite...how does this story equate to fundies? I understand that it is from Missouri, but how did you connect the dots to fundies?

28. The CITY of Kansas City may vote Dem but it is
surrounded on the Missouri side by Republican counties.

Also, Missouri IS a conservative and right wing leaning state. Without KC and St Louis, Missouri is no different than any other state in the so called bible belt.

3. You can be your kids friend or you can be a parent.
One of those options shows you truly love them but it's not the easy option.

5. false choice. you can be a parent and a friend.
it's not an either/or proposition. You simply have to recognize when you need to parent.

6. Not really.
Sometimes you have to be a parent. That means taking a stern hard road. You know it too because I bet you have done it in the past.

No love nor friendliness towards the child is lost.

12. yes, I've been both parent and friend
as I said, you just have to know when to parent. You're really just affirming what I already said.

7. Respectfully disagree.
This case involves a parent with limited insight and skills. It may well be that she also has a substance abuse problem, and perhaps what we might consider a rather gross lack of maturity. The combination of the first two would reduce her ability to provide good parenting; adding either of the other two -- or both -- and we have the makings of a bad parent.

I suspect that the case can be made that this combination didn't make her a very good friend, either. But her failures hardly carry over to other people, who have the ability to provide good parenting and enjoy a strong friendship with their children.

8. I'm not arguing that one cannot be a "friend" to their child and still be a parent.
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 02:37 PM by YOY
I am saying that a "parent friend" should not act the same as a "peer friend". And being stern at times (not all the time mind you) can set the point that the parent still is in authority.

11. There are few things
as pathetic as an adult -- male or female -- who desperately seeks to be one of their children's "in" friends. Again, these are human beings who have a very limited ability and a total lack of insight. But I understand what you are saying in this post, and agree with you on this part.

In terms of discipline, the only justifiable reason to practice it with one's children to to instill a sense of self-discipline. A person can only teach what they know. Thus, an undisciplined parent will, without exception, fail in both roles: friend and/or parent.

and always has. His son just was accepted in to the doctoral program at Juilliard. One of only seven students. Fully paid scholarship. The kid has always excelled at everything he has attempted because his parents always let him know that they loved, liked, and respected him.

23. He taught his son that everyone is equal
and he offers advice when it is needed.

My mom is a firm believer in the notion that parents should not be friends to their children. We hardly ever speak. My younger sister has shoplifted, had two children out of wedlock, gotten involved with drug dealers, etc. etc. There is a point at which the "I'm your mother not your friend"attitude does not work.Kids with an overwhelming sense that they are not OK as people and not someone worthy of being liked or truly loved can find themselves adrift pretty easily. I don't know if the mother in the OP was trying to be their "friend", or just being a drunken irresponsible jerk, or doing to her kids what my dad did to us when we drank alcohol at a young age; told us to drink beer until it made us sick. I've hated beer ever since! Unless we know more about the people involved it's hard to say what was really going on there.

Real friends look out for you when you've had too much, and don't let you hurt yourself or drink more.

I am amazed sometimes at the mundane smalltown crap that makes national news. Mother is guilty of contributing to the delinquency of minors somewhere in America. Whoopee.
