Pakistan: Would-be suicide bomber shoots himself

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A would-be suicide bomber shot himself dead Thursday when mourners confronted him at the funeral of a Pakistani police officer recently killed by militants, police said.

The bomber panicked and ran when people at the funeral in the northwestern Batkhela area grew suspicious of him, said Aziz Khan, a local police official.

It was unclear if the man had tried to detonate the explosives-filled vest found on his corpse. He was also carrying a hand grenade, Khan said.

The funeral was for a senior police officer killed along with four colleagues when militants fired rockets at their vehicles in the nearby Dir region on Wednesday.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Security forces Thursday recovered the beheaded corpse of a police officer abducted by militants in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar, police said.

The body of inspector Tariq Khan was dumped on a roadside in Matani, on the outskirts of the city, local police officer Farhad Khan said.

‘He was slaughtered by Taleban militants. They placed his severed head over his body,’ he said. The police official was kidnapped by militants three days ago, Khan added.

He said it was the first beheading of a police official in Peshawar, although Islamist militants in restive tribal regions on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan frequently kill local tribesmen and Afghan refugees.

Militants accuse them of spying for the Pakistani government, or for US and foreign forces battling the Taleban-led insurgency in Afghanistan.

The violence-plagued tribal region has has become a stronghold for hundreds of Taleban and Al Qaeda rebels who poured into the area after US-led invasion toppled Afghanistan’s hardline Taleban regime in 2001.
